1 Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, October 13,1962 9 A guide to fine dining and entertainment. Local Men Operate Guard Dog Training School Alan McKendry (left) and Peter Mehnert work :on guard dog training of a young Rottweiler. Although Although the dog looks ferocious in this photo, he's : quite tame and friendly when not ordered to defend his master. Both trainers agree that the objective of guard dog training is to have an animal which is under control at all times. They won't work with a vicious dog. The trainers are interested in forming a club for people who want to develop guard dogs. By Peter Parrott Trained guard dogs are something like the black belt judo and karate experts of the human world. Both are specially schooled to protect and defend. An Peter Mehnert, Mehnert, of Konigsberg Kennels, adds that it's a mistake to think of a trained guard dog as vicious. In fact, he doesn't even like to work with a dog which lacks a natural liking for children. "A vicious dog we will not work and a cowardly dog we cannot work," he said in an interview at Blackstock recently. Mr. Mehnert, a veteran dog handler and trainer, explained that the ideal guard dog is trained to protect if necessary and only to do so if ordered by its master. Mr. Mehnert works with Alan McKendry, of Blackstock, in the development development of guard dogs and both men are especially especially interested in "schutzhund" work. This includes the training training of dogs for protection protection and tracking competitions. competitions. The word "schutzhund" is German German for protection dog. As in obedience work, these anirtials can earn various degrees, depending on their skill. There are three levels in the schutzhund competition. competition. Such animals are described as trained pets which get along well with people. Mr. McKendry and Mr. Mehriërt believe that the Rottweiler is thè- best dog for schutzhund work, and both are Rottweiler Rottweiler owners. They have short, thick coats and are powerful without being overly large. The breed is more than 2,000 years old and dates back to the days when Rottweilers were used by Roman armies to herd cattle and to protect protect their camps. They are therefore, of Italian and German origin. In addition to the Rottweiler, Rottweiler, a number of other dogs are suitable for schutzhund work. A few of these include German Shepherds, Dobermans, Bull Mas- tifs, Boxers, and Labrador Labrador Retrievers. A number of other breeds may make excellent excellent guard dogs and each individual animal is tested for its suitability suitability before training begins. Schutzhund work includes obedience, tracking, and protection of the master against an assailant. The work also includes a courage test in which a dog will not run from a charging attacker. Another test is to order the dog to attack an assailant and then call it off before reaching the target. Once a dog has gripped an attacker in his jaws, he must let go when ordered to do so by his handler. Trainers who work with the uogs use a thick protective sleeve which they wear on their arm like a shield. However, Mr. Mehnert noted that it is important for dogs to learn to respond to genuine dangers in addition addition to the exercise that are simulated during schooling. Mr. Mehnert and Mr. McKendry have taught 14 dogs in protection work so far this year. This represents an increase over last year and they suggest that the increase may be due to greater concern over theft of property and violent crime. One of-the clients who purchased a guard dog trained by Peter Mehnert Mehnert is a sheriff in Texas. In general, it takes 10 to 15 lessons to teach a dog to guard. This estimate estimate is based on an animal with some obedience obedience training. A dog without basic obedience skills will take longer to train. For slôw-ma luring luring breeds, schooling begins at 15 months. About half of an animal's learning should take place at the property it is expected to guard. In the future, the local trainers hope to see a schutzhund club formed in this area and are interested in hearing from guard dog owners who would like to join such an organization. Mr. Mehnert and Mr. McKendry will also be offering a public demonstration demonstration of guard dogs and an evaluation of any animals that a member of the public may wish to consider for guard dog training. The demonstration and evaluation is planned for the Blackstock Fairgrounds. Fairgrounds.
