They are the John Howard Society, Mental Health Durham, and the Distress Centre. Newcastle Hydro has given almost double what was raised in 1981, and both the chain corporate campaign and personal gifts (Whitby) have achieved 51 percent of thier goal. Foundations, with $52,000 have achieved 95 percent of their total objective. Hugh Holland, the Campaign Chairman, emphasizes that the fair share giving guide is the key to the success of: I the United Way canvass.. The, recommended giving percentage is 0.6 percent of one percent of income, or 15 minutes pay per week. For example, the fair share for a person whose income is $10,000 is $1.20 per week (less than a package of cigarettes). This contributes: three cents per week to each of the 37 United Way agencies. Mr. Holland stated that if those canvassed respond to this formula - that the Oshawa - Whitby - Newcastle United Way Campaign will more than meet its objective. The Campaign Chairman makes the following appeal to the citizens. of the three communitees involved in the United Way Canvass: "In this more difficult economic period, people need the help of the United Way agencies more . than ever before. The only way we can meet , the increased needs of our agencies is for all to contribute contribute their fair share." United Way ' 576-0210.
