The Bowmanville Flying Dutchman Bantams opened their regular season on Saturday, Saturday, October 9, with a 5 - 5 tie against Pickering. The Toros looked very impressive in their season opener and should be in for a much improved season. Although falling behind 1-0 after only minutes into the game, Kelly Balson replied with two first period goals to put the Toros ahead 2-1 after the first frame. Pickering scored early in the second period once again but Bowmanville responded with three straight goals to pull out in front 5-2. 'Die third goal was scored by Greg Martin, the fourth by Mark Hickey, and the fifth by Martin again. The Toros seemed to be well in command late in the second but made numerous defensive errors and Pickering tallied for two goals in the last 52 seconds of the second period. Bowmanville played an aggressive third period, but with 5 minutes left in the game, Pickering tied the score. The Toros had numerous numerous chances late in the game including a break-away with one second left but the Pickering Pickering goaltender was equal to the task and stopped Kelly Balson to preserve the tie and deny Bowmanville its season opener victory. Playing in goal for the Toros were Phil Bird (who stopped a penalty shot) and Brian Treen.
