Shown here with staff. Annual Legion Poppy Campaign Raises Funds for Many Purposes The Royal Canadian Legion conducts a Poppy Campaign each year in the days preced-, ing Remembrance Day. All proceeds are placed in '"ast accounts and after expenses, including the cost of poppies and wreaths, are paid the funds are used to assist Canadian ex-service personnel personnel and their dependents in necessitous circumstances anywhere, and ex-service personnel personnel of Commonwealth countries and of Allied countries resident in Canada. Some of the funds may be. used for the following purposes: purposes: Community medical appliances and medical research. Day care centres, meals on wheels, transportation transportation and related services for veterans, their dependents and the aged. Donations for relief of disasters declared by the Federal and Provincial Governments. Although the Poppy Campaign Campaign is national in scope, each unit of the Legion is responsible for running its own campaign, collecting and disbursing the funds collected in its own area. There is not a central national fund where all monies are deposited. National Remembrance Program November 11th Ottawa The national televised program program is produced and directed by The Royal Canadian Legion, and is conducted and carried out with the assistance of a multitude of organizations and the Federal and Municipal Municipal Governments and a host of volunteers. There is a National Ceremony Ceremony Committee comprised of representatives of the Canadian Armed Forces, Radio, Television, Police, Department of Veterans Affairs, Public Works, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, St. John Ambulance, The National Carilloneur and Ottawa School Choir. A total of about thirty who meet on various occasions occasions go over the ceremony. The Silver Cross Mother is selected and brought to the National Ceremony, as well as the senior winners of the National Literary Contest, by The Royal Canadian Legion. The active women's group is sponsoring a draw for an enchanting Victorian doll house complete with furnishings. furnishings. It is currently on display at the Toy Box in Bowmanville and will remain for two weeks. The doll house will be shown next month at the Carnation Flower Shop and the draw will be made December December 13th, 1982, just in time for Christmas. Formed only a year ago, the six member club has grown to an active membership of 23 women. The group has become unwieldy as far as meeting in homes is concerned concerned and the nucleus of a sister chapter is presently being organized. The sorority is a broad dimension women's group which involves itself with community service, cultural expansion, fund raising and social events. Meetings are held in members' homes twice a month. The membership consists of women from Bowmanville, Orono, Newcastle village and Hampton. During its first year as an official chapter, the sorority has assisted with local blood donor clinics and made donations to Bowmanville's Bowmanville's Cancer Society.
