Walter Frank's Major Pee Wees Launched Their 1982-83 Season Another Hockey Season is upon us! To date, Walter Frank's Major Peewees have played four league games and three exhibition games. Before getting into the details of these matches I would like to announce the members of this year's team. A warm welcome back goes YAMAHA THE WAYff SHOULD BE Attention! Now down to specifics. Walter Frank's Majors took to the ice for their first contest on Saturday, Oct. 2nd, against an 1 old rival, Oshawa's LNHL Red Wings. Things did not go too well for the boys through most of this game, as they went down to C - 3 defeat. There were some bright spots however, however, as they managed to narrow a 4 - 0 deficit to 4 - 2 on goals by Brad Carnegie from highest batting average, Joe Humenick, most home runs (tied with Norm Caruana) and most R.B.I.s, Frank Smith, most improved player, John Allen, most valuable player and best pitching award, and Gord Weir, most valuable player to the league. Kingston Twp. rapped home four goals in less than five minutes to take all the wind out Walter Frank's Toros sails. Both Bowmanville goals, were scored by Brad Carnegie. His first goal was unassisted, and the 2nd was set-up by Mark Tripp. Sunday afternoon these same Toros were pitted against a reportedly awesome Kingston City team. This was Ï0S358 IMk a penalty ridden match, although not a particularly rough one, from à spectator's point of view. Walter Frank's boys played well, despite being out-shot 50 - 32 and out-scored 9 - 3. They out-shot and out-scored Kingston in the 3rd period, and of their three goals one was on the power- play and one was short- handed. The points in this game were tallied by Brad Carnegie with two goals and Jeff Laird with one. Assists went to Eric Janssens, John Begg, Guy Freeman, Brad Rushak and Mark Tripp. On Saturday, Oct. 23rd Walter Frank's Peewees did battle with the LNHL Black- hawks in an exhibition game at the Civic Auditorium. The Toros came out flying as they lit the scoreboard three times in the first 4 minutes of the game. Oshawa did not fold under this barrage and just kept picking as they scored once with less than a minute remaining in the 1st, and twice in the 2nd period to even things up. The 3rd period was a see-saw battle as both teams each scored twice to see the game end in a 5 - 5 deadlock. Walter Frank's scorers were Mark Tripp with two goals and John Begg, Brad Rushak, and Craig de Blois each scored once. Assists were earned by Chris Smith (2), Britt Cole (1), Eric Janssens (1), Jeff Laird (1) , Brad Carnegie (1), Mark Tripp (1), and Aaron Ulrich (2) . The spark of hope was snuffed out by two Oshawa goals in the 3rd period, and Walter Frank's boys unfortunately could only find the mark once more as Aaron Ulrich assisted Brad Carnegie in notching the final tally of the game. Walter Frank's Toros did not have to wait for a re-match, as the same two teams confronted each other the following day. Things appeared to be much more favourable, as the 1st period was scoreless and the 2nd period ended 2 - 2. It was a lights-out situation in the 3rd, however, as Oshawa out- skated and out-scored the Major Peewees 3 -1 to cinch a 5 - 3 victory. The Toro marks were notched by Jeff Laird from Chris Smith and John Begg, Robbie Real from Aaron Ulrich, and John Begg from Mark Tripp and Jeff Laird. One week later, Oct. 10th, saw Walter Frank Real Estate Major Peewees host Belleville in their season opener. I can think of only two words to describe this game - "no contest" - defensively, the Toros appeared adequate, offensively however they were no match, as Belleville out- shot them 40 - 14 and out-scored them 6 - 0. The following weekend, Oct. 16 - 17, Walter Frank's Peewees travelled to Kingston. As Kingston Twp. and Kingston City are AAA Clubs, no one's hopes were too high. Yes, they did lose, by a score of 8 ■ 2 to Kingston Twp, However, our hopes did improve as the Toros went into the 3rd period trailing only by 4 - 2. Unfortunately,, The final match to bring us up to date, was a regular season home game against Thornhill on Sunday, Oct. 24th, Walter Frank's Toros were going well, as they out-shot Thornhill 7 - 6 in a scoreless 1st period. After two periods Thornhill took the lead in shots 15 - 14 but they also took a 3 - 0 lead. Again in the 3rd period, the Toros stayed close in the shots on goal department, but couldn't capitalize on their chances. At the final buzzer they found themselves out of it by a 6 - 0 score, which was not indicative indicative of the overall play. Keep those chins up you Toros! The 2nd time around you'll give all these clubs a run for their money, and my money will be on the scores being in your favour. Sunday's game was a personal tour de force for Bob Marjerrison who scored four goals and assisted on two others. His line mates, Ron Clemens (two goals and two assists) and George Sainsbury (five assists) were outstanding. outstanding. The Newcastle team fought back stubbornly with two goals by A1 Clarke and singles by Sherm Shields and Ron Slack. Howard Quinney made an excellent play coming in from the right point and beating two Bowmanville defenders to set up A1 Clarke in the goal mouth. Bowmanville Bowmanville singles were added by Hugh German, Joe Balson and Mike Roberts on a set up from Siegi Rohr. Grant Wright, as usual was excellent in the Bowmanville net.
