Briefs F.leven teachers from the Northumberland and Newcastle Newcastle Board of Education have applied to work overseas for two-year terms with the Department of National Defence. In a report to trustees last week, Director of Education Doug Sifton noted that the Department of National Defence provides education to approximately 3,200 students in Europe from Kindergarten to grade 13. The students are dependents of Canadian Forces personnel, at five different different locations in Europe. Trustees agreed to nominate nominate eleven candidates for consideration consideration of overseas assignments assignments between 1983 and 1985. However, Mr. Sifton advised that it is unlikely more than one or two teachers would be selected. None of the candidates candidates who applied last year was selected, the director said. The cost of special education education at elementary school will average $197.45 per pupil during during 1981-82, according to a forecast received by trustees last week. The forecast of special education costs by 1985-86 rises to $243 for the average pupil. Doug Sifton, director of education for. Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle, noted that the information indicates the board has a very efficient system for the delivery of special education and that special education is being provided at a very reasonable cost. At the high school level, the cost of special education has been listed at $145.41 for the 1981-82 year. This is projected to reach $222 per pupil in the 1985-86 forecast. By that time, it is forecasted that 20.98 per cent of elementary elementary school students will be served by special education, and 9.2 per cent of secondary school pupils. The Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education has asked its national association association of school trustees to press for legislation against child pornography. At a meeting in Courtice last week, the board received a resolution from the North .York Board of Education noting noting that legislation on this topic is required.
