Driscoll of Moore- field and Debbie Van Camp of Blackstock, have the distinction of being the first three winners of the Junior Sheep Show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. The show was established this year to give young people an opportunity to show sheep and to promote showing of sheep in Canada. The entrants are judged 50 per cent on the sheep and 50 per cent on their showmanship. In the Novice Class for youth who have never shown sheep before, the winner was Martha Earley. Jay Van Camp, Blackstock was second and Patty Bird, Bowmanville was third. There were 10 entrants. The Junior class for exhibitors aged 12 to 16, was won by Kelly Driscoll. Second was Donna Woods, Fergus, and third was Wayne Driscoll, Alma. There were 19 entries. Debbie Van Camp won the Senior Class for exhibitors aged 16 to 19. Todd Duffield, Wyoming, was second and Charlene Whitney, London was third. There were 12 entries in the class. All of the 41 entrants in the first show were from Ontario. The winners receive $100 for first prize, $75 for second and $50 for third. The two Junior class winners were chosen Grand and Reserve Champions and Kelly Driscoll became the first winner of the Challenge Cup. at King Garden , A special place to welcome Ihe New Year. Dennis Timbrell, Minister of Agriculture Agriculture and Food when he addressed the Annual meeting of the Federated Women's Institute of Ontario in Toronto. He urged the 34 Board Directors, representing 27,000 Members in the Province to be more aware of the needs of rural women. Foodland preservation preservation and increased marketing of Ontario foods is necessary to meet our needs as well as that of the world. Mr. Timbrell asked the Women's Institute for their co-operation in celebrating Ontario's Bicentennial in 1984. Mr. Ken Knox, Director, Rural Organizations and Service Branch challenged the women to work for a better understanding of rural and urban population, working with the Branch to more efficiently understand the Producer and Consumer. The FWIO Provincial President, Mrs. Keith Hiepleh chaired the sessions dealing with varied concerns and business. Resolutions were sustained on topics of Mental Health facilities in the North; Drugs; support programs for the disabled; a referendum re the death penalty and the need for tax revisions for the fruit farmers. Mrs. Harvey Noblitt of Ottawa, the President of the Federated Women's Institute of Canada informed the Directors Directors of the projects and programs for the next trien- nium. Members are asked to study and have programs on "Unlimited Potential - Women". Joyce Canning, representative representative from the Rural Organizations Organizations and Service Branch expressed concern for new programs to meet thejieeds of todays lifestyle. Exciting challenges face the Membership as plans are being made for the Associated Country-women of the World Conference in Vancouver in 1983. Mrs. Clarence Diamond reported on plans to date, when 2,200 delegates from around the World are expect ed and we share in hosting this special event. Education is a priority with three scholarships for advanced advanced studies, 22 McDonald awards at Guelph University, County scholarships being presented, as well as $3,400,00 Being sent to Ware College, England for the training of students from underdeveloped countries. Junior Women's Institutes with a membership of 400, continue to present trophies for the Physically handicapped as well as have educational programs. Officer Conference will be at Waterloo University May 3, 4, and 5th. Mrs. Jeanetta VanSickle of Brantford completed her term as Prov. Secretary and is succeeded by Mrs. Sam Johnston of Listowel.
