4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowman ville, December 15,1962 Section Two Celebrate 70th Wedding Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Hayes On December 7, 1982 Mr. and Mrs.'Thomas Hayes celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary. They were married in the St. John's Anglican Church by the late Rev. Mind. Congratulatory messages were received from Prime Minister Trudeau, Mr. Allan Lawrence, The Town of Bowmanville and a telegram from the Queen. On December 5th they received many friends and relatives at the Strathaven Nursing Home. Busiest Time for Bell On Christmas Day, traditionally traditionally the busiest phoning day of the year, Canadians are expected to keep the telephone network humming with some 6 million long distance calls to distant friends and relatives. The whole Christmas-New Year period is generally busy with Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Eve contributing the highest call volumes. "In the Durham Region 31 extra employees will be on duty over the holiday period to handle operator-assisted long distance calls" says Orma Lyttle, Bell Canada Mânager in this area. Most of the calls, though, will be dialed direct by custo- ers who dial "1" plus the area code if needed and the number --still the fastest and cheapest way to call long distance. Mrs. Lyttle warned that circuits circuits for some calls may become overloaded at busy times because of the heavy demand on particular lines. The peak periods to avoid, if possible, are weekdays from 10 a.m. to noon and from 2 to 4 p.m. and holidays and weekends weekends in the early afternoon and early evening. Discount rates are available at certain times on customer- dialed long distance calls. The details are provided in the front of the telephone book. Bell Canada says the greatest greatest number of overseas calls will be to the United Kingdom, Italy, Greece, Germany, Portugal, France and Yugo slavia. Callers should remember remember the time difference between between Canada and the overseas country. It may mean the difference difference between an answered and an unanswered call. Holiday calling can be smoother by planning ahead. Get numbers in advance. Directory assistance for numbers numbers in North America is available by dialing "1", the area code, if needed, plus 555- 1212. Overseas numbers can be obtained from Bell Operators Operators now and kept handy for the actual call. Bell Canada is promoting Long Distance Gift Certificates Certificates as Christmas gifts. They are sold in $20 packages with four $5 certificates in a greet ing card. Customers can buy the certificates by visiting any Bell Phone Centre or Public Office, by calling the local Business Office or by calling 1-800-268-9191 toll-free to order them. A mail-in coupon appears in account inserts that went out in recent customer customer bills. Although the certificates are designated for payment of long distance calls, Bell says they can be used for paying a telephone bill or any type of telephone purchase customers make. The certificates will be accepted by most major phone companies in Canada and the United States. Library Listings New At The Bowmanville * Library FICTION: Benedictus, David. Our name was selected to reflect the multidimensional multidimensional character of our group. Our focus is on women and the issues concerning them. We intend to function as a support group for ourselves and for other women. Our group members have had extensive, experience in peer counselling and crisis intervention. We would like to use this experience to provide both on the phone and face-to- face counselling. In addition we intend to establish and facilitate women's self-help groups. We are located at the Colborne Street Community Community Centre. Wé are a nonprofit nonprofit organization and will operate on a volunteer basis. We will never say no to dona tions or volunteer support. Peer counselling is distinctly distinctly unique. The basic assumption assumption is that one doesn't need to be a professional to listen with empathy and understanding. We as women believe that women are best able to understand understand each other's problems and are well equipped to offer constructive, non-judgemen- tal support. We reject the idea that women "go crazy". Life itself can be hard and stressful especially for women in these changing times. As our name implies, we want to reach out to the community. community. We are available for public speaking on such topics as rape, pornography, sexual harassment, wife battering, the changing role of women in the work force, in the home and in the church: and topics related to the women's movement. movement. Furthermore, we will be happy to act as resource contact on any of the above areas of study. We are most interested in networking with other women's groups and will work towards being mutually supportive. One of the major concerns of this group is the very real issue of violence against women. The violence directed towards women in our society is pervasive. On the overt level, women are threatened with rape and death every day. All too frequently, the threats become actualized. On a more subtle level, women are degraded through pornography, pornography, minimized and tri- vilized through "jokes" or ridicule so that eventually, it becomes "okay" not to react to the overt violence. It becomes in short, a confusing muddle for women who are never quite sure whether they are being aggressed upon or are over-reacting in a situation. situation. We feel strongly that women of all ages would benefit benefit from learning self defence. Therefore, we intend to promote promote and facilitate the organization organization of "Wen-Do" self defence classes anywhere in the Durham region as a top priority endeavour. "Wen-Do" is a system of self defence developed by the Paige family of Toronto. The course is designed for women and taught by women. A basic course involves 12 to 15 hours of concentrated attention. This course teaches releases from chokes and holds and how to fend off knife attacks. How to deal with purse snatchers, snatchers, street hassles, and party problems are also covered. The course also pro; vides women with an opportunity opportunity to discuss self-defence law, safer ways of living, wife assault, sexual harassment on the job, rape and assertiveness. assertiveness. wfe are confident that women who take the Wen-Do course will not only acquire easy effective physical skills but will gain self-confidence as well. We are offering our first class on Saturday, January 15 and 22nd, 1983. Women who are interested interested may call us at 728-3163. When no one is at the office the calls will be taken on an answering machine. We will return phone calls usually within the same day. If you have a group of 10 or 20 women at your workplace, club, union, or other group, you can arrange a course for yourselves. yourselves. For further information information on this option or on the scheduled class, give us a call and leave your name and number. Those women who feel discouraged, discouraged, depressed, anxious, etc. and who at this point just need someone to talk to are encouraged to take that first necessary step of reaching out - give us a call and we'U be there.
