( • The Canadien Statesman, Bowman ville, December 15,1962 Section Two Providence- Shaw's W.I. Maranatha Church hall was the location of the Dec. 9th meeting of Providence-Shaw's W. I. where members and their guests enjoyed a pot luck luncheon. A collection was taken for the Salvation Army. The next meeting, Jan. 13, will be at the home of Mrs. G. Rickard. The singing of carols was led by Rose Piersma. The roll call was answered by a reason mat attracts immigrants to Canada. Many of our members came here n the 50's and were S at the opportunities le. Today, however, the situation is quite different and many of those arriving are fleeing from communism and government persecution. Gertrude Hendrikx introduced introduced our guest, Florence Tran, who came to Canada 3% years ago. Florence began by telling us about the climate and the green countryside of her homeland, Vietnam. People there are either very rich or very poor, the former being in control and the latter, at their mercy. Her husband was in business and she was provided with the services of a maid. When a change in government occurred, in 1975, the conditions for Florence worsened. She was left with three small children to support support and a government that took from the rich under the pretense of giving to the poor. The children were being taught to hate. The lessons in heroism and mathematics revolved around the killing of . Americans. Florence paid, in advance, for herself and her three children to leave Vietnam. After waiting a month, they sailed for Malaysia aboard a small boat carrying 228 people. (She emphasized small, suggesting it was about 20 feet long with a four cylinder motor.) She was able to take a small suitcase on this three day trip. Their home for the next eight months was in a camp, on a hill, in the open. Much of their time was spent in lineups for food and water that was distributed by the Red Cross. They also had to gather the firewood to cook fish. "(We were surprised to learn that the children were not given milk.) Florence was accepted to Canada because she had been able to memorize answers to basic questions in English and because she could support herself with a skill. She had been told Canada was a country with snow about six months of the year. She had been converted to Christianity from Buddhism and knew Christmas as the birth of Jesus and a time for celebrations. celebrations. Following the theme of Christmas in other lands, Frances Robinson told of groups of carollers in the streets in England. Father Christmas was a fatherly, slim character who visited the children and left a small gift. Christmas Eve and the following following day is a time for going to church. Boxing Day is a time for family gatherings and visiting. She remembers the use of candles, on a small, potted, table-sized tree. Large trees were too expensive. Dec. 6th is the arrival of Sinter Klaus and Black Peter, his helper, in Holland. Joan Tax told of the carrots and hay that were left in shoes outside the door. Dec. 25 is devoted to the religious celebration of the birth of Christ. Boxing Day is spent visiting friends. The program continued with Zarina Ramji, who has been in Canada 10 years, telling us of Christmas in East Africa. Here, there was not enough food for daily use and there was no money for gifts so a spiritual celebration with people going to church at midnight is her remembrance. remembrance. "And what, to our wondering wondering eyes should appear, but a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer". Well, not quite. But we did get a jolly old elf in a red suit who came Ho Ho Ho ing her way into Marantha Church hall, which we believe must be a first. Annabelle Rickard thanked Joan Tax and the Citizenship and World Affairs Committee for planning the program. We closed .the meeting with the Mary Stewart Collect! Newton ville Garage Fire By Peter Parrott A fire in Newtonville last Friday afternoon resulted in a loss of approximately $10,700. Newcastle Fire Chief Jim Havman said the blaze occurred occurred in a two-car garage owned by James Pitt, of Hill St. The fire was confined to the garage, although there was slight damage to the nearby house. The garage, along with a truck and some equipment, were destroyed. Firefighters from the Newcastle Newcastle Fire Hall responded to the blaze, with assistance from water tankers at Bow- manville and Orono. Cause of the fire is believed to be a wood-burning stove, Chief Hayman said. The blaze occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. on December 10, IT'S PARTY TIME!
