Letters to the Editor January 4,1983 Dear John: In order to clarify any misunderstanding in the recent tender by the Town of Newcastle, for three new Vi ton trucks, I feel compelled to write you to state our position as we see it. The tender was awarded to Victoria Ford at $9,144.00 per unit for operation on leaded fuel. Cowan Pontiac tendered on General Motors 'k tons using unleaded fuel at a cost of $8,649.00 per unit. The difference difference between the Ford tender and General Motors tender being $495.00 per unit in favour of Cowan Pontiac. In total this would represent a savings on the three trucks of $1,485.00 plus 7 percent Sales Tax $103.95, for a total savings on the General Motors trucks of $1,588.95. We noted that the figure used by the town for unleaded gas was obtained at a retail rate and not on their tendered price which they could obtain. The price for unleaded gas would only be .10 cents per gallon more. Using the corrected cost for unleaded gas and the formula used by the town to get a Total Annual Cost per true)' we came up with: a savings of $8.00 per unit to operate the General Motors trucks. The town came up with a figure of $382.00 in favour of the Ford. If unleaded fuel was used you could expect the following benefits: Less frequent oil changes, Less frequent Tune- ups, Longer Exhaust System life, Longer Spark Plug life, Fuel burns cleaner - no carbon build up. Using leaded fuel represents false economy. We understand that the town does not have unleaded tanks, but in view of the above it is still cheaper to buy General Motors. By Peter Parrott A review of standards imposed on new development should be one of the Town of Newcastle's planning priorities, priorities, according to a recommendation recommendation of the general purpose and administration committee. Planning Director Terry Edwards said Monday that the standards of development are one of the planning matters which the municipality must face this year. Some of the topics related to development standards include include the requirement for underground wiring and the necessity of storm drainage. Councillor Diane Hamre pointed out that residents who move to the Town of Newcastle Newcastle may not expect to find all the urban services of a large city. She suggested, for example, that home purchasers purchasers may prefer to do without the added cost of sidewalks until a later date when a neighbourhood could afford to pay for them through local improvements. In this way, the cost of a mortgage could be reduced. Councillor Ann Cowman introduced a resolution which would include lot levies, development standards, and the servicing of, industrial areas as planning priorities 'fori 1983. ! 1 fifut these are not the only areas of concern for the planning department this year. Other major projects which require the attention of the department include hamlet hamlet development plans, completion completion of the comprehensive zoning by-law and the review of the Courtice Urban Area in relation to the planned extension extension of GO Rail services. Planning Director Terry Edwards noted that there are 2,300 residential lots which have received approval in the Town of Newcastle. As of November, 1982, the total number of new dwellings to receive permits in the municipality during the year stood at 23. Most of the new dwellings were in rural areas.
