Although starting out slowly and falling behind 2 - 0, the Toros dominated the second and third periods, scoring twice in the second frame ana three times in the third. Bowmanville's first goal was scored by Murray Henderson, assisted by Mark Hickey and Warren Short. Mark Hickey scored less than two minutes later to tie the score at two. Murray Henderson Henderson and Kelly Balson recieved assists on the goal. Uxbridge came back early in the third frame to go ahead 3 - 2. Then came the Bowmanville Bowmanville assault. Within a span of 39 seconds the Toros potted three goals. The fourth Toros goal was by Mark Hickey from David Tuepah. The fifth by Warren Short from Greg Martin and the final Toros' goal was scored by Rodney Bate, assisted by Murray Henderson. Uxbridge scored once more but Bowmanville hung on for the victory. This game proved to be very costly for the Bowmanville lads as they lost the services of Mark Hickey and Kelly Balson due to major penalties (high stick, cross-check) in the third period. These two players will miss the Toros' first playoff encounter this Saturday against Trenton at 5:30 p.m. at D.S.C. Good luck Toros! It should be noted that the Toros also lost the services of Robert Boyle for an indefinite period with a broken shoulder due to a freak accident. Way . to go Tom. Hang in there Rob! Commercial League Set for Playoff Action By Bob Sheridan Bowmanville defeated Glen- wood 3-1 in the opening game. Bob Sheridan opened the- scoring on a pass from Dave Green. Bob Marjerrison made the score 2 - 0 and Dave Green added the clincher on a beautiful pass from Irv. Gill. In the second game, Joe Balson put on a one man show, scoring all three goals to defeat our perennial rivals, Orono in a 3 - 2 contest. Irv Gill picked up two assists on Joe's goals with other assists going to Dave Green and Bob Hellam. The Orono goals were score by Bob Faulkner assist ed by Jim Rickard and George Fames and by Frank Sawyer assisted by Dean and Keith West. In the final game, Bowmanville Bowmanville was defeated by the Oshawa Sudsers 4 - 2. Bowmanville Bowmanville goals were scored by Bob Deblois and assisted by Joe Balson and Dan Girardi and George Sainsbury. Goal tending duties were shared by Grant Wright allowing only six goals and Art Hester (one goal) on the whole day. This weekend King Gardens and Heritage House journey to Ottawa to play in the international international Old Timers Hockey Tournament. The central Ontario Division of the national model railroad association held a rally Saturday at Bowmanville's Visual Arts Centre. The get-together attracted about 90 enthusiasts providing serious modelers with an opportunity to talk shop and share ideas. The central Ontario group holds rallies four times a year in various locations. Many of the attendants were from out of town including the pair above. David Lawler (left) of Scarborough and modeler Bruce Horin of Brampton are shown discussing their hobby. The Soper Valley model railroad club hosted the event. Heritage House Bantam 2s Playoff Hopes Are Dimming By Ted Brown Last Sunday marked the end of the Commercial Hockey League's regular season. The two hottest teams over the last month; Spencers and Walter Frank's showed they are ready to challenge Cowans and league leading Bolahoods in the semi-finals. In the first game Sunday, Spencers out-skated, out- cnecked and out-scored Bolahoods Bolahoods in a 5 - 1 victory. Although Although Bolahoods have the best won-lost record in the league, they have had trouble recently with injuries to key Terry Baker, Mike and Phil Manganeli, who have hurts. Coincidentally, Coincidentally, these teams collide in the semi-finals. Once again for Spencers their big line of Jerry Johnson (three assists), Brian Allin (two goals, one assist) and George Bowen (one assist) led the way. Bolahoods did their best to keep tight rein on this trio, but found it impossible. Spencers' defence played well as they limited the number of shots that their goalie Kevin Gibson had to face. Mike Adams (two goals) and Jim • Hogarth were particularly sharp. Also scoring for Spencers were Steve Starkey (one goal), Don Cowle (one assist), and Russ Maxwell (one assist). Rick Woolner finished off a nice passing play from Bob Howes and Barry Oliver, for Bolahoods' only goal. This team must rely heavily on the replacements for their injured teammates or it will be a short playoff. The second game was another blowout as Walter Frank's shellacked Cowans 10 - 1. Perhaps Cowans were trying to lull the real estate crew into false security for the semis. Cowans, like Bolahoods, Bolahoods, have lost several key players this year. Fortunately, Fortunately, they have been replaced replaced for the playoffs. Mike was the big man for Franks. Besides being six foot three he also scored four goals and assisted on three others. Not bad for a guy that up until this year was a defenceman. Tim Jenkins, the other half of the Newcastle connection, v/as good for three goals and three assists. Also scoring were Sam Elliott (one goal, two assists), Mike Donoghue (one assist), Tom Yeo (one goal), Dex Osmond (two assists), Tom Connell (one goal) and Mark Starkey ( two assists), Cowans' only goal was scored scored by Arnold Nicolson with assists going to Sam Allin and Joe Burns. Special congratulations congratulations should go to Steve Hogarth for being able to stand after having run the league party the night before. This Sunday, Bolahoods and Spencers start their series at 10:00 while Frank's and Cowans play at 11:30. McGregor Minor Bontems Win First Playoff 8-2 The best way to keep a secret from an enemy is never to tell it to a friend. On Jan. 22nd, McGregor Minor Bantams played an exhibition game in Newmarket Newmarket and although they gave their opposition a good fight the Toros came out the losers with a 3 -1 score. It was a fast, hard played game and the Toros had numerous scoring opportunities but it was not until the 3rd period that Scott Page put the Toros on the score board. Jamie Downing and Ted Groves collected assists. Our defensive lines must be congratulated for helping David Smith with his job of goal tending. They certainly all helped keep Newmarket down to a 3 - 1 win. The Toros played another exhibition game Jan. 29th against Goulding Park from Toronto and in this game came away the winners. The Toros outplayed their opposition opposition and should have had a much higher score than 4 - 2 but on many occasions the puck went everywhere but in the opposition net. In the first period, Goulding Park scored the only goal. Then in the second period the Toros turned on the power and put in four goals. Glen Campbell scored two well engineered goals by linemates Chris Shmyr and John Romano. Chris Beck added a goal on nice passes from Brian Noble and George Pithie. Brian Noble collected his 60th goal with George Pithis assisting assisting again. Goulding Park managed one more goal in the 3rd period to end the game 4 - 2 for the • Toros. Travis Martyn did a good job at goaltending for the Toros and adding his bit of verbal encouragement to his fellow players. Jan. 20th the Minor Bantam Toros started their playoffs with a best out of seven series against Trenton. The Toros completely dominated the game and collected their first win 8 - 2. Chris Beck and Chris Shmyr scored the two first period goals. Assists went to Jamie Downing, Ted Groves, John Romano and Glen Campbell. In the 2nd period Brian Noble and Scott Page added two more to the scoreboard. George Pithie, Larry Perris, Jamie Downing and Ted Groves collected assists. Trenton put in one goal in the 2nd period. Third period goals were added on by George Pithie (two), Chris Beck and Chris Shmyr. Assists went to Chris Beck (two), Brian Noble (two), George Pithie, Kelley Armstrong and John Romano. Rrout's Raiders Add Two More Wins to Their Record On Jan. 22, Prout's Raiders won a close checking battle against a strong Hutton Transport Transport team. Prout's Raiders defence were able to hold off the Hutton team with the help of their forward lines doing some back checking. Captain Terry Kellet opened the scoring scoring at the 12:40 mark of the first period, assisted by centre Jason Hellam. A few minutes later, Jason Hellam scored unassisted making it 2 - 0. Later on, Hutton Transport scored, ending the period 2 -1. Early in the second period, Prout's defenceman David Kichko scored from a point shot. Shortly after Hutton scored again ending the second period 3 - 2. i At the 6:30 mark of the third period, Prout's captain Kellet scored again, assisted by Jason Hellam and Paul Crago. Prout's goalie Shane O'Brien, making some super saves throughout the game, helped defeat the Hutton team by a score of 4 - 3. In another game on Jan. 29, Prout's Raiders earned another another win over the Goodyear Rangers. In this game, team members gave it their all as Prout's goalie Shane O'Brien, playing another super game, a well deserved shutout. Prout's captain Kellet again opened the scoring at the 13:50 mark of the period assisted by Ivan MacDonald. Midway through the first period captain Kellet scored again, assisted by Ivan MacDonald and ' Richard Gorden. In the second period, centre Jimmy McWilliams connected with a shot, assisted by Martin Vanderheyden. Prout's team kept skating which resulted in Captain Kellet's third goal of the game, with the assist going to Richard Gorden. The game ended with a 4 - 0 victory for Prout's. Good work boys. On Feb. 5, Prout's Pee Wees take on their fathers and on Feb. 12 they meet I.O.O.F. in their last league game. PEACOCK LUMBER LTD. Building supplies. Our specialty is lumber and lumber products. N., Oshawa Custom Milling 725-4744 The chances of the Heritage House Bantam two Toros advancing to the next playoff round took a decided turn for the worse this week, as the Toros dropped three out of four games. Heritage House must now win all of their remaining four games and hope for some upsets among the other teams if they are to advance. The week started off well, as Heritage House opened their eight game round-robin series with an eight to two victory in Pickering. Ten different players had a hand in scoring. Ed Parrdis led the attack, with a goal and four assists. David Fairey picked up two goals and an assist, Mike Knight had a goal and two assists, with other goals by Barry Oliver, Scott Cole, Paul Hutchison, and Paul Stainton. Hutchison also had an assist, as did Mike Houston, B. Oliver and Ken Desmidt. Ken Cameron had another strong goalie in the Toros goal, keeping Pickering off the scoresheet until Bowmanville had the game well in control. Heritage House should have saved some of these goals, as Tuesday night in Brooklin they missed numerous scoring chances in losing 5 - 2. The Toros fell behind 4 - 0, but mounted a furious comeback in the 3rd period. Knight from Stainton and B. Oliver, and Jeff Thompson from Knight brought Heritage House to within two goals, but they couldn't get any more, despite some great chances. Goal- tender Brian Treen held the Toros close throughout the game with some key saves. Friday night in Markham, Heritage House came up with one of their best defensive efforts of the year, but a three goal outburst in the first five minutes of the 3rd period enabled Markham to eke out a 3 - 2 victory. Thompson had given Bowmanville a 1 - 0 lead five minutes into the game, and that goal stood up until the Markham spree in the 3rd. Desmidt scored late in the game, but it wasn't enough. Unfortunately their solid defensive effort, especially by goaltender Treen and the entire defence corps, wasn't enough as the Toros could not muster any sustained pressure pressure in the Markham end. Ajax came to town Saturday night and skated away with an 8 - 3 win. To use an old cliche, the game \yas closer than the score indicates, as Heritage House held a territorial edge in play and shots, but a hot Ajax goalie and a lack of polish on Bowmanville's part let to Ajax's win. Goalie Cameron was frequently left undefended, and was beating for six goals. Treen allowed the final two. Barry Newhook, Knight and Fairey scored for Heritage House. Paradis, B. Oliver, Knight, Desmidt, Cole and Andrew Oliver picked up well earned assists on the goals. The defensive play of Heritage House, which was so sharp in Markham, deserted Heritage at home. Next action for Heritage House is Saturday, Feb. 5 at Darlington against Pickering. Meriy Makers Smith 9, 7106, Roberts 8, 7446, Harrison 6, 7114, Etcher 5,6827, Junkin 4,6825, Piper 4, 6710.
