Dalewood Rink Wins Hooper's Curling Spiel By Bob Sheridan Because of our fine showing in last year's international tournaments, .we were placed in a division with very stiff competition last weekend at the Labatt's National Tournament Tournament in Ottawa. In the first game we were defeated by the Florida Elder- gators 4 - 3. This was a hotly contested game and Art Hester Hester was superb in the Bowmanville Bowmanville net. The Florida team had such names on its roster as Larry and Rosaire Paiement, older brothers of Wilf Paiement of the Quebec Nordiques. Bowmanville Bowmanville goals were scored by Ron Clemens on a rebound from a point blank shot by Bob Marjerrison, George Sains- bury from Jim Olinski and Bob Deblois on a great pass from Grant Flintoff and George Sainsbury. Bowmanville Bowmanville pulled the goaltender in the last minute and swarmed around the Florida net taking shot after shot only to be frustrated by their sixty-seven year old goaltender, John Stromberg and old father time. In the second game we were defeated 4 -1 by a strong team from Pine Falls, Manitoba, a team which had been moved down a division from last year's tournaments. Bowman- ville's goal in the final moments was scored by Dave Green assisted by Joe Balson and Jim Olinski. Grant Wright gave a solid performance in the Bowmanville goal. In the final game we were defeated 5 - 2 by a young R.C.M.P. team from Ottawa. Bob Sheridan stole the puck from an R.C.M.P. defenser just inside the blue line and set Dave Green up for a fine goal on a great backhand shot. The prettiest goal of the series was scored by George Sainsbury who tipped in Hugh German's perfect pass in the goal mouth. George came flying in from the blue line with such violence that he crashed into the boards and ended up in a heap behind the R.C.M.P. goal. The R.C.M.P. went on in the play-offs to become group champions over a total of 14 other teams competing. We played our best and we had a fine tournament. We are looking forward to a victory in Ottawa nekt year. Dutchman, Town Sports Remain Tied in Non- Contact League Play five goals and three assists, rolled to an easy 11 - 2 romp over Bowmanville Restaurant and Tavern. Town, now unbeaten unbeaten in nine, also got goals from Ken Holmes (three), Rick Stockman, Alex Barnett and Erik Strand. Cal Wheeler and Art Cormier beat Mike Willoughby for the Restaurant. Restaurant. The final game of the weekend saw Clinic Pharmacy Pharmacy build up three goal leads twice and then hold on for a narrow 6-5 triumph over a determined Beastie club. Clinic, outshot by a 32 to 29 count got goals from Dave Hanson (two), Pat Murdock, Issor Dubinsky, Doug Leppert and John Allen. In the first game Bolahoods who were bombed 5 -1 by Spencers last week, reversed the tables this week by clobbering the real estate crew 12 - 4. Coach Johnson became goalie Johnson Johnson for Spencers. Unfortunately Unfortunately for him, his team forgot to skate both ways. Bolahoods must have had at least eight break-aways and numerous other good chances. I don't think Goodyear has seen as much rubber as what Johnson saw. For Bolahoods it was a full team effort with everybody contributing. Rick Woolner was top point getter with five goals and one assist. Bob Howes contributed two goals and four assists. The prettiest goal of the game was a Rick Vaive type goal scored by Gord Weir located at the corner corner of the net. Other points went to Joe Humenick (1 goal), John Taylor (2 assists), Ted Brown (1 assist), Bob Engley (1 assist), Kevin Jenkins (2 goals), and Paul Dadson (1 assist.) Spencers' scoring was done by Danny Armstrong (1 goal, 1 assist), Steve Starkey (1 goal), Brian Anderson (1 goal), Jerry Johnson (1 goal), Jim Hogarth (1 assist), John Binning (1 assist), and Ken Hall. P.S. Don't count Spencers Spencers out yet. The second game was an excellent contest between the hottest team in the league (Walter Frank's) and league doormats (Cowans). Some how, Cowan's always came to life in the playoff. For four years now this change about has been led by the duo of Burns and Allin. I don't mean George and Gracie, I mean Joey and Sam. This year is no different as they scored both goals for Cowan's. In the first period, Frank's took an early lead on a goal by A1 Clarke with assists to Gord McNabb and Barry Fenton. Cowan's were lucky to keep Frank's from getting more as they played short-handed most of the period. The game remained 1 - 0 until the third period when Cowan's tied it. Burns finished a passing play from Tom Wreggett ana Sam Allin. Frank's went ahead 2 -1 at the mid-point of the third on a, goal by Randy Masterson assisted by A1 Clark. This looked like the winner as the clock wore down. Cowan's pulled out all the stops with a minute to go. Sam Allin finally tied the score with 45 seconds to go. Arnold Nicol- son picked up an assist. Final score2-2. The Dutchmen squad came up with an important 6 - 3 victory over United Drug in the opener on Saturday night, while Town Sports demolished Bowmanville Restaurant and Tavern 11 - 2 on Sunday. Once again, it was Jim Smith doing the damage by scoring three, his first coming at the 2:02 mark of the opening period, for the Dutchmen. Rick Hall, Dan Moriarity, John Stainton, Smith again and then Rick Drew traded goals within a four minute span which gave the Dutchmen Dutchmen a 4 - 3 lead after two. United, playing shorthanded for much of the 3rd period, were able to hold the Dutchmen Dutchmen scoreless until Brian Caron, on a solo effort, scored into an empty net with seven seconds remaining on the clock. John Rowlands also had an empty nctlcr to complete the scoring. Saturday's night cap saw the slumping Courtice Auto Wreckers drop their 7th straight 7 - 2 to a vastly improved Shopper's Drug Mart squad. Shoppers with the two points, now move four up, on Courtice in league standings. standings.
