Your regular correspondent correspondent has resumed writing writing after an absence of seven weeks. Many thanks to Jessie Fisk for sending in such newsy, chatty items while I was on leave. I wish I has some of her literary talent. Bert Frape returned home last Tuesday following a two week holiday in the Caribbean. Caribbean. He spent one week cruising cruising on the S.S. Victoria, visiting visiting the islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix, etc. and the last week was spent on Puerto Rico at San Juan Towers. Bert was accompanied by his daughter-in-law. Larry and Evelyn Bradley returned on the weekend from Florida where they had been vacationing for the past two weeks. On Wednesday, February 9th, 2nd Manvers Brownies held a successful bake sale and tea. The girls did a program program pertaining to badge work and several badges were handed out. Once again parents came through with an abundance of baking. On Saturday, February 12th, Donna and Walter Bryant and family held an Open House in honor of the 40th wedding anniversary of Donna's parents, Eileen and Ken Maguire. Friends came from Toronto, Cobourg, Gooderham, Oshawa, Bowmanville Bowmanville and Peterborough to share the celebration. The beautiful weather and congenial congenial atmosphere made it a day to long be remembered. Margaret Wright attended the funeral of her aunt, Miss Minnie Hopkins, in Oshawa last week. Winners at the last euchre in Ballyduff ■ were Cathy Mac- Kenzie, Bertha McGill, Stan Wright, Sid Powers with special special prizes for the evening going to Ralph and Anne Holt- by. The next card party will be held on Friday, Feb. 18. A Park Board meeting is planned for Tuesday, March 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the Pontypool Community Centre. The executive would like all coaches to be present, Kelly Neals left on Monday morning for Miami, Florida. He expects to be playing ball with a team from there for the coming season. Our best wishes go with Kelly! The guest speaker at the Pontypool United Church on Sunday was Rev. Kay Humphries of Consecon. Her sermon entitled "Possibility and Accountability" was very interesting. The girls and boys, too, were quite intrigued .with her children's story - comparing a clock and its parts to the human body. The choir rendered the anthem "Take Time to.be Holy" with Nettie Aiken at the organ. Don Genge of Cayan will be the guest speaker on Feb. 20 and Feb. 27. On Sunday, Feb. 20th, the Brownies, Guides, Pathfinders, Pathfinders, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and their leaders will attend the 10:00 a.m. service in Pontypool United Church. Kathleen Morton of Bethany asked that I put the following information in the Pontypool column, hoping that some readers will be interested in its content. A group of citizens would like to form a Historical Society for Manvers Township. Township. The objective of this society will be to try to preserve preserve some of the township artifacts and buildings. The Bethany Post Office is the first aim. The interested group hopes to have the building remain in the township and use it as a beginning for the newly formed organization. Last week's high bowlers were Lorraine Challice with a single of 236 and Marion Fisher with 400 for the high double. This week's high single of 239 was rolled by Carole Stinson. Carole also had the high double, 400. On Saturday evening Ballyduff Ballyduff Hall was filled for the Ladies' Aid Pot-Luck Supper. At 6:45 p.m., following the blessing by Rev. There were musical numbers -- vocal and instrumental -- readings and two skits by the Pontypool U.C.W. Visitors with the Keith Dewars last Saturday evening were Curly and James Denholm Denholm and Mary Edwards of Oshawa and Greta and Sam Goldie of Lindsay. Pontypool Anniversary Service Service is to be held at 11:00 a.m. on June 12th with the Rev. Bill Wells of Peterborough as the guest speaker. Plans are underway for the Annual Salad Supper to be held this year in May, As many ladies as possible will go to the World Day of Prayer to be held in St. Paul's Anglican. Church, Bethany, on Friday, March 4th. Kay Youngman reported that Grace Fallis, Jessie Fisk, Nettie Aiken, Margaret Murphy and herself had attended attended the U.C.W. Rally in St. James Church, Peterborough, on Tuesday, Feb. 1st, and had thoroughly enjoyed the session session with Mrs. Locke from Springville as the guest speaker. Following a Valentine contest contest by Jessie Fisk and the Mizpah Benediction, the meeting meeting closed. The Pontypool Fire Department Department has a new fire truck which is presently being painted and equipped for duty. Last Thursday evening, the Keenagers met for their regular regular meeting in the Pontypool Community Centre. Following the business portion of the meeting, euchre was played with Ruth Richardson and Harold Moore having the highest number of points. St. John Ambulance taught its first Canadian first aid class in Quebec City in 1883. Since then they have taught about seven million Canadians home health care and first aid. They estimate their volunteer Brigade has helped some 10 million people. Mrs. Addison Scott was in charge of the worship program program and opened with the hymn, "My Faith Looks Up to Thee". The theme of the worship program was "Faith, Hope, and Love," and the greatest of the three being love. Mrs. Mary Capell read from Cor. 13:1-13 and summed up by saying, "There is a destiny that makes us brothers, brothers, none goes his way alone, all that we put into the lives of others, comes back' into our own." The offering was received and the worship concluded with the singing of the hymn, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". The program was based on the theme "Can U.C.W. Help You", and taking part in role plays were Hazel Ryley, Violet Carr, Bertha Ferren, and Mary Capell. They depicted depicted women in different situations and each needed help with their frustrations and problems and found it in the fellowship of women's group. They showed them that Christianity is not a voice in the wilderness, and that there is no substitute for everyday caring. BETHANY NEWS I imagine that the skiers had a very good time this last weekend, with all the snow and cold temperatures. The cars with ski racks were streaming by our house on both days. A new society is being started up in Bethany. It is the Manvers Historical Society and their inaugural meeting is to be held on Wed., Feb. 23rd at 7:30 p.m. in the Bethany Town Hall. Interested individuals individuals as well as representatives representatives from local groups are invited to attend this meeting. The Golden Stars Sr. Citizens Citizens held their regular shuffle- board games on Feb. 9th and at 10 a.m. it was team two: George E. Clarke, Gertie Clarke, Iva Porteous, Lloyd, playing against team three: Annie Sharpe, Dave Brooks, Eleanor Brooks, Leonard Driver. Each team finished the matches, winning one each. At lfa.m. it was team one: Irene MacDonald, Derena Clark, Mildred Bristow, Bristow, Bertha Ferren playing against team four: Mary Morton, Mildred Braithwaite, Jessie Adams, Lawrence Adams. Team four proved to be the better team that day as they won both games. At 1:30, it was the general meeting of the Golden Stars Sr. Citizens and the meeting was opened by the President, Georgina Scott, and then the Secretary, Mary Morton, read the. minutes of the last meeting. After that is was "Happy Birthday" to those members celebrating and also special congratulations to Ralph and Ann Holtby who are celebrating celebrating a wedding anniversary. Best wishes are extended to Mr. Tom Jennings, who has returned home from hospital, and also to Molly Ward and Fenton Fallis. Students from Grandview Public School will be coming to entertain the Sr. Citizens at the next meeting on Feb. 23rd and those interested are invited to attend. A good crowd is hoped for. As there was a lack of men, the ladies replaced them in seven tables of euchre that were played. The high lady was Francis Jackson ancf the low lady was Muriel Morton. The high man was Electa Smith and the low man was Bertha Ferren.
