By Ted Brown An enormous crowd of spectators saw some fine action in the second weekend of action for the semi-finals in the Commercial Hockey League. The players sure did their best to not disappoint their fans. In the first game, Cowans led Walter Franks for the first two periods. Their strong fore checking kept the potent Franks attack from clicking. Unfortunately, they eased up for a five minute stretch during which Franks potted four goals to move them ahead 7 - 3. Cowans then dug in and closed the gap to one goal. " Cowans final gamble failed as Franks scored again to give them an 8 - 6 win. Scoring for Franks were Tom Connell (four goals), Barry Fenton (two goals, two assists), A1 Clark (one goal, two assists), Tim Jenkins (one goal, two assists), and Mike Wade (four assists).A1 Clark, besides getting three points, played an especially good game and made his own breaks. Cowan's new addition, Gerald Morrison fit in well on a line with Joey Burns and Sam Allin. This line combined on a pair of goals fired by Allin. Brian Dennis also chipped in a pair of goals.Other points were picked up by Tom Wreggett (one goal), Tom Dwyer (one goal), Arnold Nicolson (one assist), and Rob Large (one assist). Spencers came out roaring in the second game and were leading 3-0 before Bolahood finally got in gear. Jerry Johnson picked up the first goal on a quick break set up by George Bowen. John Binning potted the second goal on a pass from Brian Anderson and Danny Armstrong. The third goal scored by George Bowen from Brian Allin and Mike Adams. In each case Spencers caught Bolahoods with the quick break and accurate shooting. John Taylor got Bolahoods on the score sheet just before the end of the first period on a pass from Doug Leddy and Joe Humenick. Bob Howes narrowed the gap to 3 - 2 early in the second as he and Rick Woolner broke in around Spencers defence. Taylor and Humenick set Woolner up a few minutes later to tie the score. It looked like the game was going to end in a tie during the third as both defences tightened tightened up. With four minutes to go Bolahoods got sloppy and allowed Johnson to set Allin up to set a 4 - 3 victory. The Commercial League banquet is scheduled for April 16th at Kedron Dells Golf Club. It was a close match, according to the score- board, with the decision going to Oshawa by a narrow 4 - 3 margin. The Toro scoring plays included Brad Rushak from Jeff Laird - Eric Janssens from Jeff Laird and Chris Hall - and Mark Tripp from Guy Freeman and Craig Deblois. On Sunday, Feb. 6th, Walter Frank's Toros opened their round robin play-off series by hosting Trenton. Good team work along with hard skating and determination earned Walter Franks' boys a 4 - 4 tie as they continually fought to catch up. Craig Deblois scored twice, while Mark Tripp and Guy Freeman notched one each. Assists were earned by Chris Hall (two), Mark Tripp (one), Jeff Laird (one), and Guy Freeman (one). The Round Robin continued on Sat., Feb. 12th when Walter Frank's Pee Wees travelled to Lindsay. Speculation has it that the Toros thought the Lindsay team would not present much of a challenge, as they had to date lost their first two games to Trenton and Cobourg. We all know what thought did! - Lindsay out- hustled, out-skated, and unfortunately unfortunately out-scored Walter Frank's boys to the tune of 6 - 3. The three Toro goals resulted from hustle and good team work. Mark Tripp scored twice while Craig Deblois added one. Assists are credited to John Begg (one), mark Tripp (one), Eric Janssens Janssens (one), Craig Deblois (one), and Guy Freeman (one). The third game of the Round Robin was played at Darlington Darlington on Sun., Feb. 13th with Cobourg as the visitors. And so it came to pass, that Cobourg out-hustled, out- skated and unfortunately out- scored Walter Frank's Toros by a score of 4 - 2. With a bit of luck and a lot of 2nd effort, Walter Frank's Pee Wees could easily turn things around and defeat both Lindsay Lindsay and Cobourg. The Toro goals were scored by Craig Deblois from Guy Freeman and Aaron Ulrich and by Brad Rushak from Jeff Laird and Brad Carnegie. The re-match with Cobourg will take place on Friday, Feb. 19th - so come on boys. Get out there and show Cobourg and all your fans that you really can do it! o* T ?% téi XT»' CAMSPORT TRAILER SALES Hwy.115and 35 Newcastle 987-5174 1977 and 1978 CHEVRON and HOLIDAY TRAILER Large selection of TRUCK-CAPS In stock REFILL CENTRE "KRAC0" Registered Builder of Carpentry & Contracting Newcastle 987-5400 Çustom built homes, farm, home and cottage improvements. On Sun,, Feb. 13 the boys hosted the Trenton team in their first playoff game in their best four out of seven games.
