It was no different for Mardi 6th, the traditional month of stormy days. Allin Osborne conducted the opening of the service at Welcome United Church for the few minutes before the arrival of Rev. Gordon Rutherford. This is to prevent a build-up of time lag when three services are conducted in the morning. Rev. Wm. Kennedy, recently moved from Port Hope to Smith's Falls, tells of being called to assist in the Northern Pastoral Pastoral region, an area of scattered small churches, they too had three services a day. He told of the difficulty of getting replacements there, when illness illness strikes. The theme of Rev. Rutherford's Rutherford's sermon was based on the text "Quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger." For the children's story and adults' sermon alike there was emphasis on the fact that we are prone to listen with half our attention and talk too quickly when another is trying to tell us something. This especially applies to family members. The junior choir members in their bright gowns and faces just as Bright, enriched the service with their singing of, "The wonder of it all, The wonder of sunset at evening," etc. The offering was received by Bill Beckett and Glen Thompson. On Wednesday, March 2nd, several from here attended the annual Presbyterial in Port Hope. They were: F. Reeve, Emma Darke, Christine Wilson, Jean Payne, Gwen Best, E. Barrow- clough, Berniece Best, Orald Ford and Hazel Tufford. Truman Austin has been in hospital for a few days for repair work on an old ailment and for tests. He is hoping to be home this coming week. There was a good attendance attendance at the World's Day of Prayer held at Welcome on Friday, March 4th for all of Hope Township, with members from Garden Hill, Perrytown, Canton and Welcome Welcome Churches. Mrs. Suzanne Rutherford welcomed the ladies and led in the service where leading was necessary. The program was.in the hands of all to follow and had been produced by the women of the Caribbean. The speaker was Mrs. Lauris Da Costa of Newtonville, a worker with the health unit in Cobourg. She is a native of Jamaica and received her education there, and in universities in United States, Scotland, Montreal and Kingston. She described Jamaica as it was when she lived there. Music was provided by a ladies' choir, and special music by Barbara Gray, Elizabeth Gray, and June Smith accompanied at the piano by Suzanne Rutherford. Also Christine Wilson, Ruth Kellogg, and Barbara Croft accompanied by the latter two with guitars, sang "The Lord's Prayer." Scriptures were read by three UCW presidents, Jean Payne, Ruth Mills, Ona Gardiner and Suzanne Rutherford. The offering offering was received by Mary Gardiner, and Bertha Trew and dedicated by Sybil Davis. Around the world on this day Christians unite in Prayer, and this local group enjoy the special fellowship meeting once a year as they speak, and listen, to each other as they have refreshments at the close of the service. Because of the open winter, the pessimistic folk among us wonder if spring would be a long time in coming but bird harbingers have arrived. Flocks of redwings came here on Thursday, March 3rd, robins have been seen on the lawns, but some of those hardy fellows remain all winter, whether these did or not they didn't show themselves themselves before. The same could be said of geese which were seen on Friday. A young man found an owl in distress one day last week, fast in a barb wire fence. He cut the wire but a wing was broken so he sought help from Audrey Wilson. The bird was sent to the owl sanctuary at St. Catharines and its fate would depend on the "Room at the Inn".
