Mr. Albert Munnelce and sons returned home Monday evening from a skiing holiday spent in Mont St. Marie, Quebec. Mr. George Van Den -Bogaard and Miss Laurie Benedict, Oshawa, were Sunday dinner guests of the 0. Challices. Mr. and Mrs. Lome Bowins were recent visitors with her sisters in Woodstock and Hamilton. . The Kirby pot-luck dinner and progressive euchre party were well attended with 13 /■"tables of cards played. High lady - Norma Moffat, low lady - Violet Sutcliffe. High man - Laurence Harris, low man -, FredBeaucage. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Taylor, Scarborough were Saturday guests of his father, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Taylor and enjoyed enjoyed luncheon together. We are sorry to report that Mrs. Hilda Coatham and Mrs. Doris Loucks are patients in Bowmanville hospital and their many friends are wishing wishing them better health. Mr. and Mrs. Don Scott and family spent the past weekend visiting her sister, Mr. and Mrs. Ward Thompson and family, Napanee. Mr. Bill Tomlinson, A1 Barnard, Mrs. Ruth Yeo, Jamie Cowan, Mrs. Betty Cowan, Mr. A1 Yaworski and Donald Scott were among Orono Scout, Beaver and Cud leaders attending the Regional Regional Conference of Boy Scouts held in Napanee Secondary School over the past weekend. World Day of Prayer World Day of Prayer was held Friday, March 4, in Main Hall of Orono United Church, with a very good attendance. Visitors were present from Kirby, St. Saviours, Newcastle Newcastle and Bowmanville. Lois Brown welcomed everyone and read the introduction for the service from the Women of the Caribbean. Mary Bunting gave an interesting resume of life in the Caribbean, and the various religions. Isabelle Challice acted as reading leader throughout the printed services. Mrs. Bertha Touchburn was pianist and Stella Carson rendered an enjoyable enjoyable solo " Open My Eyes. " Mr. and Mrs. Edgar James were introduced and presented presented a very beautiful ana inspiring inspiring slide and narration presentation, presentation, of "God's Creation." Creation." Mr. James is, of course, a well known photographer and lover of nature and Mrs. James so capably narrated along with the pictures. This was much enjoyed by all those present. The ladies of Unit No. 2, served a tasty lunch to complete an afternoon of fine Christian fellowship. Credit Union Dinner The Orono and District Credit Union held its annual dinner and meeting on Friday, March 4, in Newcastle United Church. The Newcastle U.C.W. served a very delicious delicious roast beef dinner. A number of Orono people attended attended this annual event. Orono U.C.W. News The ladies of Unit No. 1 met on Wednesday afternoon, March 2, in the Main Hall of church (afternoon) with (11) eleven ladies in attendance. The devotions and program were looked after by Nellie Baird, Thelma Gilbank and Mary Berry. Plans were drawn up and finalized for our upcoming banquet for the Dairy Herd Improvement Association, Association, to be held Wed., March 23, and also needs for our first Lenten Sunday evening evening service this Sunday. Seventeen ladies of Unit No. 2-met at the home of Mrs. E. Billings and Mrs. Dorothy Bailey on Tuesday afternoon, March 1. The devotions were given by Bertha Touchburn and Edith Taylor, and were based on the theme "Be Still and Know." E. Billings gave the mission study in the South Pacific. Unit 2 ladies are to serve lunch at the World Day of Prayer on Friday of this week. Unit No. 3 News Held at the home of Mrs. Ruth Allin with 16 ladies in attendance. The leader, Joan Hallingsworth welcomed everyone and read a poem. The devotions were in charge of Neice DeJonge, Audrey Rutherford and I. Challice, were on the "Cross," an Easter theme. Merle Gilbart was in charge of the Recipe Exchange and many interesting recipes were exchanged for the nominal fee of 25 cents. Our "Bakeless Bake Sale," netted a terrific profit of close to $80.00 and proved you can raise money, with no work ! Unit No. 4 Unit No. 4 ladies met at the home of AnnaMae Barnard with 16 in attendance. The devotions were in charge of AnnaMae, Edna Watson and Eleanor Shetler. Edna conducted some very interesting contests and some ladies busied their hands with their quilt blocks. This group is making another quilt and Ruth Grady will put it together. together. Their previous quilt won them a first prize at Orono Fair several years ago and then sold for a goodly sum. Another new project for these ambitious girls is the selling of plates with our church oictured on them and mugs. These have been ordered ordered and we are waiting for "your" order now. Many people collect churclf plates so here's another one for you! Congratulations Unit No. 4. Orono United Church News David Staples led in psalm and scripture readings at the regular Sunday morning service, and the choir anthem was "I Must Tell Jesus." Happy Birthday to Kennedy Gray who celebrates his birthday March 10th. A leader is still needed for the Explorer girls' group and we are now looking for leaders for a brand new C.G.I.T. group to be organized this fall. This group will take graduates of Explorers and all girls of 12 yrs. and up. Please contact Ed Millsen if you could help in these departments at 983-5754. Lenten Series of Ecumenical Worship Begins Sunday night, Orono United Church at 7:30 p.m. Fellowship and refreshments follow in Main Hall; May 13th at St, George's Hall, Newcastle; Newcastle; March 20th at St. Francis of Assissi Roman Catholic Church, Newcastle. Theme of series -- "Jesus Christ -- The Life of the World," (World Council of Churches will use at their meeting in Vancouver this summer.) Study leave for Rev. First of Lenten Services Held on Sunday evening in Orono, with Rev. Haldenby, St. Saviours and St. George's, Newcastle, giving the New Testament scriptures and the , sermon. Rev. Aubrey Tizzard, Newtonville gave the pastoral prayer. Mr. David Gray, organist and choir director, and members of Hi C ushering. ushering. Mr. Lucien Lambier, Kirby Church, gave psalm and Old Testament readings. Lunch was served by ladies following service. Orono Sr, Citizens Club The Orono Sr. Citizens Club of Orono met Thursday, March 3, in Orono I.O.O.F. Hall with 20 members present. Mrs. Hilda Tamblyn was in charge of meeting and Mrs. Edith Taylor gave the previous previous minutes and the financial financial reports. The afternoon was spent S ing progressive euchre the following winners: high lady - Hazel Hallowell, low lady - Ona Miller, high gentleman - Wesley Wood, low gentleman - Mrs. Bertha Touchburn (asman).
