Starting in the fall of 1963 a selective ' harvest system will be in effect throughout Ontario moose range which is open to hunting. hunting. The selective system will attempt to shift the harvest pressure away from adult moose cows, to the adult bulls and calves. The desired harvest harvest will consist of 50 percent adult bulls, 20 percent adult cows, and 30 percent calves. Too many cows. and not enough calves were taken in past:moose hunts. This ratio can now be altered for a particular particular management unit. For example, an increase in the herd size can be accomplished by decreasing the proportion of cows in the harvest. Anyone qualified to purchase purchase a residents hunting licence may obtain a licence to hunt moose arid may take a calf moose in any Provincial wildlife management unit having an open moose season. Residents wishing to hunt bull, or cow moose, as well as calves, must apply in a corn- tor a bull, or a cow, but not both. A moose licence need not be purchased prior to applying for the draw. Validation tags are good only for the wildlife management unit for which they are issued. Archery hunters must also apply in this draw, and if issued a validation validation sticker for a bull, or a cow they should note that it is not valid for the gun season if not James Insurance BROKER LTD. Applications for the computer computer draw must be received in Toronto (Wildlife Branch, Surveys and Records, Whitney Whitney Block, 99 Wellesley Street West, Toronto M7A 1W3) by 5:00 p.m. on April 29, 1983. Only one application per hunter may be submitted. The new selective harvest will result result in the end of the shared harvest regulation - hunters will, once again, be permitted to hunt alone. However, party hunting will still not be permitted. permitted. When you shoot your moose you must immediately affix your tag to the downed animal, and then you are finished hunting. You cannot continue to hunt once you have used your tag. Calf moose of the year tend to have much shorter muzzles than adults; they are smaller than adult moose; they usually usually have uniform brown hair on their faces; they have proportionally proportionally longer legs relative to body size than adults; and they are more slender in the hindquarters compared with an older animal. .
