One day when Jane was getting the eggs, she heard a sound coming from the hen house. When she got there, there was a fox chasing some hens. She got a dart gun and shot him right between the eyes. The fox died right when the dart hit it. That night, Tom heard a sound coming from the chimney. There was a nest of bats in the chimney. Tom called his dad. He closed up the chimney. It was the last day of the week. A fire broke out in the bam. A light fell on some hay. The animals were out in the field when it happened. Tom was upstairs in the bam. He jumped jumped on a horse below and roue it to the fire house. Tom rang the bell. Hie frightens came and hitched up the horse team. They went to the bam and put out the fire. It burned up the whole bam but a canble wasn't burned. They said "We don't think that the light was the cause of the fire. We think someone started the fire on purpe". They found out who did it. The candle started the fire and he threw the candle into the bam after the fire was put out. The person who did it was a man named Jim. By Michael Pearce Grade Four Newcastle Public School Living on a Farm Living on a farm is fun. A farm has chickens, pigs, and maybe even horses. When you live on a farm there are three rules . . . 1. Always look after your animals. 2. Always give them lots of care. 3. Always give them the proper food. You must always feed your animals. And you can never sleep late instead of feeding your pet or animals. Now do you know how to feed your animals and remember the three rules. Jason McMaster Grade 3 Orono-Lockhart Safety Is Up to ; Me' FARMING When you live on a farm you have to work hard. You have to plow the fields and feed the animals. If you don't feed the animals they will get sick and you would have to work harder. harder. You have to cut the grass, milk the cows, collect the eggs from the chickens and a lot of other things. You have to learn how to operate a tractor. Some people think it's easy but it's quite hard. You have to go straight and turn at special spots. If you turn at the wrong place you might cut up growing growing plants. It's just like cutting up money. You have to do all this and more. Shean Kennedy Grade 3 Orono-Lockhart School THE NEW FAMILY It all started on Wednesday, March 2nd, 1983. I went out after school to check if any goats had their kids. There were three kids but one was dead. After about two days, the largest female was beginning beginning to get friskey and liking to jump all around a lot. It also started to get mischievous. mischievous. The smaller female was not getting enough milk so it was not active. Every time we went out to do the chores we would have to help it to drink. Within a couple of days it had become strong and had learned to drink by itself. On Tuesday the 8th, Susan went out to check on the goats and found two new-born kids in Sarah's stall. After coming up to the house, we found that Sarah had three kids. There were two males and one female. female. All were of a tremendous tremendous size. Within five minutes all three were attempting to stand. In about ten minutes they all had already taken their first drink. Six days later on the 14th Sally had one very large male kid at 3:30. Stuart found it already born when he came home from school. Altogether now we have six very active baby goats. By Steven Schweller Grade 5 Maple Grove School By Marilyn Sewell P.Ag. Farming is one of the most diverse and challenging occupations occupations in Ontario. This diversity diversity not only creates interest and enthusiasm in the workplace, but trials and tribulations as well. Just one of these challenges is the area of farm safety. The list of dangers is long and complex. Just as there is no single cause for most accidents, accidents, there is no single cure. The constant interaction of man, machine and the environment environment can create untold situations where an accident can occur. • The baseline in safety is your attitude. You really have to believe that safety is important important to you, your family and your farming operation or everything else you do is worthless. Let's face it! It doesn't matter how much land you own or how many top producing cows you milk or how big your new tractor is, if you aren't there - how much K rofit potential do you really ave? Stop and try to put a price tag on an accident. How much would it cost to replace you even for a short time? How many extra medical expenses expenses will you accumulate? The list goes on and on. An accident is caused by a hazard, whether it is an unsafe act or unsafe condition. Once you have recognized the hazard or the potential for a hazard to develop, then you can deal with it. Again, you have many choices. You can correct it, guard against it, protect yourself physically from it or you can ignore it. It's your choice! You can choose to work safely or not, but you must be prepared to live with the consequences. Accidents are happening every day to every age group in every type of farming. The statistics are staggering! Over 40 persons lost their lives on Ontario farms in 1982. Farming is a great life. And if you're alive, the farm is a great place to be. In order to keep our farms safe and productive, productive, each of us has to adopt the attitude that "Safety is Up To Me!" Accrostic Chickens lay eggs. High in a tree. She was taking care of a goat. We had alot of fun trying to get the goat to move down the street. After we tried everything we could, he started to walk down the street. They used to have geese except they killed them. They have chickens too. One time the goat tried to get up onto a little table outside and knocked it down. There was a little chicken under the table, but he was not killed. We went into where the goat sleeps. He had an old table, couch and chair. He also had salt to eat. Rachel has two cats one is Silvia and the other is Misty. I, like Misty she is gray but I like Silvia too. Rachel has a big house. They have alot of nice things.
