Richard Elston, executive director of the hospital, said last week that the provincial Ministry of Health has granted granted a 7.8 percent increase over the amount it provided last year. This grant is intended to compensate for inflation, Mr. Elston explained. The provincial funding, plus revénue from other sources is expected to be enough to balance the budget, Mr. Elston said at a press conference conference last week. The budget set by the board late last month includes operating expenses only. It does not take into account capital expenditures which will be set at a later date. It may even have been a hotel at one time. The stores located there have included the sale of fur hats and gent's furnishings (when it was owned and operated by a Mr. 'Marcus' Mayer), a shoe repair business (under a Mr. Durggan, who was also a band master at that time), and a confectionery store. A classy advertisement for a business at this location still exists which states 'Merchant Tailoring and Gent's Furnishings - English Goods in Abundance - Suits $10.00 to $30.00. J. Jeffery, Proprietor'. More recently, the building has been converted into a single unit, providing both products and service. The winner of the 'MYSTERY MERCHANT QUIZ' will receive $300 in 'BOWMANVILLE ANNIVERSARY BANK NOTES' which may be used in the purchase of goods and services from any of the merchant members of the BOWMANVILLE BUSINESS CENTRE.
