It's difficult to resist playing with them! Whenever area farmers need anything -- from work boots to dog food -- they can go to the Durham Farmer's County Co-op just north of Orono. For the 700 to 800 area members, the co-op has an exceptional exceptional variety of goods at competitive prices. Wilf Burrus, the manager of the co-op, says, "If the farmers farmers want a particular service or item, we try to meet the need. We have competitive prices on most items. ' ' When a farmer becomes a member of the co-op, he is, in effect, part-owner of the operation. Wilf says that depending on what the farmer spends during the year, he receives receives a return on his money called a patronage. This year's patronage was five per cent. The Co-op is in sound financial financial shape. Current and fixed assets amount to $856,738, with a working capital at the end of 1982 of $525,293. Sales in 1982 totalled almost $2 million and net savings amounted to $117,105. The co-op was founded in 1947, the idea coming from the Durham Federation of Agriculture. Agriculture. Meetings were held throughout the summer, and on June 24, an executive was elected. After purchasing the old Lockwood Mill in Orono, the co-op opened its doors to business on Jan. 1, 1948. Robert Glanville was the manager. Managers after that were R. McGarrity and Ross Gilbert. By July of 1950, the co-op was in debt by $17,000. Ernie Spry took over as manager, the co-op cleared off the debt that year, and financially, it has been solid ever since. A new location was needed for the growing business and land was purchased from Lawrence Hooey in the north of the village. A showroom, five silos, storage and warehouse warehouse were constructed and the new co-op officially opened on Jan. 24, 1958. More than 3,700 people attended. Ernie Spry retained his position as manager until 1969. Angus Loucks became manager and retired in 1980 when Wilf Burrus took over. The co-op recently held its 35th annual meeting. The directors for the coming year are Stanley Millson, Bill Forest, Wesley Oke, Glen Stapleton, Sam Turner, John Stone, Ewert Robinson, Robert Allin and Lawrence> Harris. The co-op has 10 employess who are hired by the board of directors. Scott Robinson, mill hand, fills sack with feed produced right at the Durham Farmers' Co-op.
