OPENING GAME -- The Toronto Blue Jays will meet the New York Yankees in the opening game in Toronto this Saturday, April 9th at 1:30p.m. SKATING -- The Orono Figure Skating Carnival will be held this Saturday at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Featured skaters will be Scott Maybee, Stephanie Hood and the dance team of Debbie and Jimmy Hutton. RIVER RACE -- The Skeena Hall, Port Hope will show films on White Water Canoeing, on Saturday, Saturday, April 9th starting at 1 p.m. as part of the activities of the Port Hope Ganaraska River Race. There will also be a beer garden at the hall, and dancing until 1 a.m. OSHAWA KNIGHTS -- For the fourth time in a row, the Oshawa Knights have been humiliated in the final game of a hockey tournament. On Saturday in Manvers, the Knights lost 6-4 to the Oshawa Toros after leading 4-2. The Knights defeated Frankford 7-3 and Brantford 8-2 to reach the final game. After defeating the Comets 10-3 in the opening game, the BOC's lost four games straight to end their hopes of this year's title. Goalie Ross Hawes was again sensational in the net for the BOC's and Frank Hooper playing both forward and defence was a tower of strength. Arnold Rennick and Copeland also turned in strong games. (< <{'{ ' v' V j v ' j 'P/S' >.y, > MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT -- Ron Best of Cobourg presented the Bob Best Midget Memorial Tnrohy to Randy Tennant, captain of the Orono Midgets, whose team won the Bob Best Memorial Midget Hockey Tournament held in the Orono Arena recently. It was the first time in eleven years that the Orono team had won the annual memorial tournament. The tournament is held annually in Orono honouring a former team member, Bob Best, who drowned while swimming at the Garden Hill Conservation Area. There was a good turnout for the memorial tournament this year with four Midget teams vying for the top honours. On Friday morning, His Worship Mayor Garnet Rickard dropped the puck to officially open the 4th annual Non Contact hockey tournament at Orono Arena. He was assisted by league President Bob exciting matches of the tournament. The game ended in a 3 - 3 tie and a ten minute sudden-death overtime period failed to produce a winner. Tournament format dictated that a one on one shoot-out take place and after both teams failed on the first attempt, attempt, Frank Sawyer scored ■for the Dutchmen while Dave Forrester held his ground and saved at his end in net for Dutchmen to allow the Dutchmen! Dutchmen! to skate off champs. The game M.V.P. for Newcastle was Glenn Murphy while Frank Sawyer walked away with the Molson Award for Game M.V.P. for the Dutchmen!. Dutchmen!. Canadian Division - The B.N.C.H.L. playoffs champs United Drug bounced back after Mississauga Red Wings had beaten them earlier in the day to beat them 3-0 to claim the Canadian Division Championship. Game M.V.P. for Mississauga was John Hamilton while Goalie Ron Stainton won the Molson Award as United's Game M.V.P. Golden Division: In much the same manner as United bounced back, Courtice had to come with a superb effort to defeat Clinic who had earlier defeated them to hang on to a 3 - 2 score to claim their championship. By Bob Burke The 4th Annual Bowmanville Bowmanville Non-Contact Hockey Tournament concluded Saturday Saturday night after three days in two arenas, Orono and Newcastle, Newcastle, some 400 hockey players players participating, thirty-five hockey games and 48 hours of action to proclaim five local teams champions. Action commenced Thursday Thursday evening with three games at Orono. It was to set in motion a concerted effort from numerous people to run the largest tournament of "Old Timers" seen in this area for years. There was action on the ice, video recording recording of the proceedings and refreshments in the bar while "Old Timers" relived the action action on the ice. Friday morning the action switched to out of town teams as our Mayor Garnet Rickard dropped the first puck to officially open the tournament and welcome our visitors. When the final whistle halted proceedings for the evening, only three of the twenty teams had been eliminated - The Toronto Sun, Casey's Red Wings from Ajax and Town Sports from Bowmanville. Bowmanville. Action resumed Saturday morning and it wasn't until the final game in the round robin set-up, that was used this year, that all finalists were declared. Evers 216. the Minors pitching in to host a well-organized ana rewarding tournament. The first game of the day was played by the Toros against Whitby- Brooklin. The Toros appeared tired and not quite as sharp as the opposition and as a result were womped 11 - 2 by Whitby. In the third period, Kevin Farrow was able to get the puck by the Whitby- Brooklin goaltender goal- tender to break the shut-out. He was ably assisted by Matthew Doughty and Jeff Flintoff. The Toros were able to score a second goal, this one by Brad Banks, assisted by Kent Vanderheyden. The second game of the day for the Toros was played against Ajax. This time the boys were more alert and played much better positional hockey. However, they fell short of winning, but not bad considering several boys on the opposition were 11 yr. old. Ajax scored four goals while Bowmanville scored only two goals. Goal scorers were Jason Kiely assisted by Matthew Doughty, and Kent Vanderheyden assisted by Brad Banks and Kevin Roberts. This game eliminated eliminated the Toros from the final games. Barrie won the "A" championship against Whitby 1 - 0, while Trenton won 3 - 2 over Ajax in overtime. In exhibition games Saturday, Saturday, March 19 and Sunday, March 20 goal scorers were Kent Vanderheyden (2), Matthew Doughty, Kevin Roberts and Shawn McFadyen with assists being awarded to Matthew Doughty, Ron Luxton (2), Chris Brown, Christian Forsey, Shawn McFadyen.
