The Guide Reunion when Newcastle Guides celebrated their 25th anniversary at Newcastle Community Hall on Sunday, May 1st was also much enjoyed by many. Plans for their May meeting include a trip to the Darlington Nuclear Plant. A donation of $50 was given to the Canadian Cancer Society. Baptist Church News Sunday, April 24, was Missionary Missionary Sunday of the month at Newcastle Baptist Church. Guest missionaries were Mr. and Mrs. Lionel Green of the Sudan Interior Mission. Mrs. Green had been a former missionary in Bolivia. The children were delighted with the talk from Mrs. Green at the 10 a.m. Sunday School. Mr, Green spoke at the morning service and at the 7 p.m. service showed picture slides on mission work in Bolivia. Mr. and Mrs. Green expect to go to Bolivia in August 1983 as career missionaries. Sunday, May 1st, was Memory Sunday in . our Sunday School Service. The students were challenged as they refreshed their minds on the previous month's Bible lessons and special guests, Scripture memorization of Psalm 1 has begun. The call to worship was given by Worthy Matron Gladys Farrow who also expressed appreciation for the organization's opportunity opportunity of worshipping there. Rev. Gordon Rutherford welcomed all of the visitors and assured them of the pleasure pleasure of their having them there. The responsive psalm was led by Chaplain John Goldie. Rev. Rutherford's message for the children concerned concerned camping and the joys of nature and the nearness to God when we are in a quiet corner of the country. The choir's anthem was one of praise, "Praise Him, the Lord of AH". There was a variety of flowers to bring their silent offering, and the regular offering offering was received by Ross Bamsey, Bill Beckett, Ron Brimacombe and Allin Osborne. Osborne. Rev. Rutherford's sermon was based on the story of Esther. She was a brave woman who dared to take a stand which was very dangerous dangerous to her. She was sustained by her faith in a position we find it hard to understand for women of that day were considered considered chattels which could be bought and sold. It's a moving story. Read it. Mrs. Vera Austin is in St. Joseph's hospital in Peter- , borough where she is receiving receiving therapy following surgery to mend a broken bone. She is progressing favourably. Quilters finished the third quilt at the Bric-A-Brac in Port Hope last week and this coming week hope to finish one at Mrs. Emma Darke's. On Friday April 22nd, Mrs. Gwen Best drove to Apsley, taking four other ladies, Orald Ford, Catherine Hoskin, Ber- niece Best and E. Barrow- clough with her. They went to the home of Ken and Margery Ashby where there was a dresden plate quilt in the frames and their stitches during the day enabled several "rolls" to be made. The day was beautiful, roads dry and the coffee breaks, dinner, and visit with old friends made a delightful day. Last week we put a friend in the wrong town, Joan Jiggins who had been home during that weekend, lives in Chatham. Kevin Austin wound up the hockey season by attending a banquet at Newcastle on Sunday, April 24. Mrs. Emma Darke was in Toronto a week ago to attend a function in honour of her sister. On Sunday, April 17, a stained glass window was dedicated in Manor Road United Church by Rev. Gillingham Gillingham in memory of the late Edna Hale, faithful member of that church. It was presented presented by her husband, Harold Hale. The saga of the robin continues, continues, but he seems to be getting discouraged with his dashes at the windows a little less forceful.
