Captain Ellis Cuff of the local Salvation Army Corps conducted the funeral service service on Saturday, May 14th from the Morris Funeral Chapel, assisted by Major Wm. Brown of Toronto who also rendered two vocal solos. Interment in Bowmanville Bowmanville Cemetery. Mrs. Bartlett was born in 1901 to William and Matilda Mutton in Bowmanville, where she lived until the death of her husband when she moved to Bancroft in June 1982. She served the Lord in The Salvation Army from an early age and gave generously of her love and service to all. Or perhaps it is because he is such a quiet, down to earth gentleman, that he is so highly regarded by those who know him, Whatever Whatever are the undefineable qualities about Oscar's personality, personality, the high regard in which he is held was made evident on Sunday afternoon, May 15,1983, when seventy of his friends, young and old and every age in between, greeted him with admiration to congratulate congratulate him on his 90th birthday, which date is Thursday, Thursday, May 19th. The Church hall at Leskard, Oscar's lifelong community, warmed with a brisk, wood fire in the pot-bellied stove inside the door, alive with the friendliness of Spring flowers, proffered the perfect cosy setting for a Sunday afternoon visit. What a wonderful gathering it was. Robert Chater and his wife Mary greeted each one at the door after his or her coat was hung up and turned to Oscar who met each friend with a warm, characteristic acknowledgement. acknowledgement. Some of Oscar's family friends are fourth generation, and they receive from him the same valued regard as a friend as tried and true as his contemporary, 97 year old Ernie Nicholson, for instance. Ernie, a former Leskard miller, sat down for a real chat with Oscar. Visitor's signatures were recorded in the guest book. OBITUARY JOHN CARL WRIGHT A funeral service was held for John Carl Wright .on Saturday, March 12th, 1983 at the McDermott Panabaker Chapel, Port Perry with interment at Cadmus Union Cemetery. The Rev. Dale Davis of Blackstock United Church officiated. Mr. Wright was born at Fairview Farm Blackstock and would have reached his 9Qth birthday on May 20th of this year. While growing up on the farm he was active in Junior Farmers and took great pride in his horses, Shorthorn cattle and Lèicester sheep. 1 In November 1982, the members of L.O.L. 133 honoured him by presenting him with a plaque recognizing his 72 years of active service with the Lodge. For many years he was a Trustee of S.S. 2 Cartwright School serving at both Elementary Elementary and Secondary levels. He was an active member of the Blackstock United Church and served as a Steward and was an Honourary Elder until his death. He was a member of the Cartwright Agriculture Society and held the office of President. He enjoyed travelling and curling and was an avid gardener, gardener, supplying friends and family with the fresh produce from his garden. After farming for 35 years on the farm now owned by John Carnaghan he retired to Blackstock. His interest in children was evident when he chose to drive the school bus for many years, becoming very attached to the students on his route. On September 15, 1982 he and his wife, Isabel celebrated their 62nd Wedding Anniversary. Anniversary. He is predeceased by a daughter, Pearl. KENDAL Those who attended the ; District Annual in Solina last. week were Mrs. Janet Dyke- man, Miss Catherine Stewart and Mrs. Eleanor Foster. It started at 9:30, and broke for a delicious ham and salad luncheon followed by a delicious delicious cheese cake around 12:30. They had a sing song led by one of the branch group as well as a monologue of Charles Farquansen done by Mrs. Rita Fraser. The day's i program closed at 3:30 at the Solina Community Hall. During the afternoon, a new President was sworn in by the name of Mrs, Marjorie ; Prescott. Mr. and Mrs. Chris Newell and son, Daniel James, 1 Toronto, spent the weekend 1 with Mr. and Mrs. Ken Dyke- man in Kendal. Friends and neighbors of Mrs. Mabel Elliott who is a patient at St. Michael's Hospital, Hospital, Toronto, reported that sne is coming along nicely and should be home soon. We are all happy to hear about the good news. Lest We Forget Our Heritage Let us stop and think of years gone by, When they had no cars and planes didn't fly, When folks worked hard and days were long, But they did their best both the weak and the strong. They built their barns, and thrashed their grain, They worked together in sunshine and rain, The women preserved fruit and made the jam, And men killed the pork and cured the ham. Those were thedavs when friend met friend, And always had a helping hand to lend, To folks who found the going tough Or of food just didn't have enough. They nursed the sick and helped the poor, Gave to the homeless who came to their door. Yes, times have changed for better or worse, Now we use a tractor instead of a horse. We take the car to go to the store, No more lamps to clean, "That awful chore". We use the hydro for this and that Still we can't find time to sit and chat.
