Jim fouled off five pitches before Croak won Bantam Legionaires Split In Two Rain Delayed Games the contest and struck him out. Port Hope held the local team scoreless, defeating the Merchants in a 13-0 contest. On May 31st, the Bantam .Legionaires travelled to Trenton Trenton and came away with a 12 - 6 shortened game win in wet, cold weather. After a short rain delay, Bowmanville jumped on the Trenton starter for five runs on three hits, two walks and an error in the 1st inning. Bowmanville Bowmanville had extended their lead to 9 to 0 before the Trenton hitters could solve the offerings of Dave Aiken when they scored two runs in the 3rd on two hits, a walk and an error. Trenton's only other threat came in the 5th inning, with Troy Foster pitching in relief of Aiken. Clement, the Trenton Trenton catcher, hit a towering home run with two on. Aiken and Foster combined for 12 strikeouts in the six inning game, while the Bowmanville Bowmanville attack was led by David Fairey and Andrew Oliver with two hits each. On June 2nd we took on the Oshawa Bantams and lost 14 to 8 after leading 8 to 7 into the 7th inning. The game was then called due to a 10:30 p.m. curfew. The Oshawa pitcher, S. Smith, struck out the first five batters and was sailing along until the 3rd inning with two out, after two pitching changes, six walks and two hits, Bowmanville had sent five runners across the plate. Oshawa scored, in the 3rd and after a 10 minute rain delay scored four more in the 4th to tie the score. Bowmanville Bowmanville batters went down 1-2-3 in both the 4th and 5th innings. A single by Oshawa's G. Vail, a wild pitch, and two well , placed sacrifice bunts scored Oshawa's 6th to go ahead in the 5th. Three walks, a single, and a costly error allowed Bowmanville Bowmanville to score three runs in the 6th and again take the lead 8 - 6, however the lead was shortlived shortlived as Oshawa got one back in the 6th and broke the game open in the 7th. Two unfortunate unfortunate back to back errors allowed allowed Oshawa to score the tieing and go ahead runs. Bowmanville batters only managed four hits with Jay Kelly getting two and Troy Foster and Warren Short one each. In one game, Magee held a 2 -1 lead going into the 5th inning when Jones' offence finally got in gear. Jones' team scored three runs in the 5th, five more in the 6th and another another three in the 7th to pull out a 12 - 4 win and up their record to three wins and no losses. In the other game, Dakin's team scored two runs in the top of the 6th to pull within one of Truax, but they couldn't shut down Truax's offence in the bottom of the sixth as they gave up three runs and went on to lose 11 - 7. Dakin's team showed improvement over their last two games though and we may win a game yet. Manager Rick Truax struck out nine on way to his 3rd win. Tryax's team is now three and one on the year. It will be Dakin vs. Magee and Jones vs. Buchanan. The Canadian Foresters will also be taking a team to Bel- fountain on Saturday to play a team from that area. Good luck guys! Hooper's Mosquitoes Lose One Win One On June 7th, the Hooper's soccer team travelled to Newcastle Newcastle and came away with a win, but it was a hard fought contest. Newcastle gained a one goal lead in the first half and continually continually took the ball away from the Hooper's team. The Hooper's boys thought the ba)l would come to them if they looked at it and Newcastle intercepted the ball many times. In the second half, Hoopers started to apply a bit more pressure and goals by Doug Lever and Richard McCheyne were enough for the win. A good effort by Andy Big Canoe and Gary Martin saved Hoopers Hoopers on many occasions. On June 14th, the Kinsmen team beat Hoopers 6 - 2. Jason Ryan scored four goals for the Kinsmen. It was during the last ten minutes that the game was decided. Until then it was 3 - 2 for the opposition. Excellent Excellent play by Chris Foster, Richard McCheyne, Michael Hilborn and Karl Wunderlich resulted in the two Hooper's goals. Scott Apted played very well in goal. Jason Boerstra was the most improved player for Hoopers. The Mosquitoes had no scheduled game this week. On June 15th the Atoms hosted the Tyrone I team at the Darlington pitch. The final score, after a hard-fought game was 4 - 2 for Tyrone. This was the first loss of the season for the Atoms and rather disappointing for them. The goal scorers for Hampton were Shawn McFadyen - 1, Trevor Mercer -1. For Tyrone - M. Doyle -1, E. Smith -1, W. Hockett -1, R. Ianfamasia -1. On June 16th, the Squirts (sponsored by Roy Nichols Motors) travelled to Pine Ridge to play the Bowmanville Bowmanville Blizzards. The Squirts continued to play well and dominated this game too. The final score was 6 - 0 for Hampton. Hampton. Hampton goals by Richard Bateman - 3, Neil Gerrits - 3. The goalkeepers who earned the shut-out were Danny Martin in the first half and Jamie Mercer in the second half. The Squirts remain remain undefeated. Also on June 16th, the Tykes played their first game at Hampton Public School against Bowmanville Villa Tykes. All the children played with great enthusiasm. It took a few minutes of the first half for the children to get oriented into the game and determine which direction to carry the ball. Occasionally the goal keepers left their nets to come out on the field to where the action was. The final score was 6 - 0 for Hampton. The scorers were: Jason Jeffreys - 2, Jeff Crawford - 3, Aaron Pudlis - 1. The Bowmanville team had no "subs" and although the children tired quickly they never gave up. I hope the children enjoyed playing the game as much as the parents did watching it. I would like to thank all the friends, neighbours, and Grandmas and Grandpas of the soccer teams who so generously supported the players in their chocolate bar sales this past week. The community spirit demonstrated demonstrated was gratifying. Thank you too, to all the zealous young sales people who did all the work, to make the campaign campaign a success. The funds raised are helping to pay for the team pictures being taken on Monday and Tuesday. By J. Gardner Hampton CARPOOLS -- Five more carpool parking lots will be completed this year, announced Transportation Transportation and Communications Minister James Snow. This will bring the total to 31, since construction construction of the first lots in 1979, and provide space for over 1600 cars. Recent counts of existing existing lots indicate an average occupancy rate of 62 per cent. They save Ontario 3.1 million litres of gasoline annually and decrease vehicle kilometres kilometres travelled by 21 million. In addition, the users themselves save a considerable amount of money by sharing rides. A dangerous situation has been eliminated by the presence of the car- pool lots. Before the lots were built, commuters meeting to carpool would park on highway shoulders and along ramps at interchanges. The lots contribute to increased commuter safety, energy conservation and decreased road congestion. congestion. In this area there are carpools at Oshawa, Oshawa, Newcastle. Orono and Port Hope.
