FIRE HAZARD DEFINITIONS T.FARMER - EXTENSION TECHNICIAN Ever wonder while at the cottage or camping, exactly what Ministry of Natural Re- cources Forest Fire Hazard Danger Ratings are saying? If so, here is a mini dictionary for you to clip and save. There are four hazard ratings used by the Ministry, they are; Low, Moderate, High and Extreme. LOW - fine fuels, such as dead grass and leaves, or small twigs, require large heat sources like campfires to dry them out before they ignite. Fire spread is limited, and very slow, there should be no problem controlling a fire when the hazard is low. MODERATE - fine fuels can be ignited by any open flame, i.e. a burning match. Fire spread is slow and should be easy to control. HIGH - most forest fuels will ignite easily from glowing embers, burning cigarette butts or open flame, Fire spreads quickly on the ground and many spread into tree tops. Fires are difficult to control and some fire restrictions restrictions may be put into effect. EXTREME - means DANGER!' All forest fuels ignite ignite very easily from sparks, embers, or any fire source including lightning. Fire spread on the ground or in the tree tops is difficult to control. Fire or travel restrictions will be in effect if the extreme conditions persist. No one can control the hazard conditions, they are determined by the weather. However, everyone can learn the dangers involved with forest fires and be extremely careful with fire at all times. FIRE PERMITS In the Lindsay District townships of Bexley, Belmont, Verulam and Drummer you must have a fire permit for any fire, other than for cooking cooking or for warmth, from April 1 to October 31. The Fire Permit system benefits both you and the Ministry of Natural Resources. Resources. When you obtain the fire permit which 1 is free you are informing the fire control office when and where burning burning will take place. This helps to eliminate unnecessary checking of reported fire and smoke sightings. The conditions conditions set by the fire control office also help lower the chance of your fire getting out of control. If your fire does get out of control call for professional help immediately, don't try to regain control alone. For more information on fire permits and safe burning practices, contact the Lindsay District office Ministry of Natural Resources at 324-6121. -7lianlz ^fjou We would like to thank the following businesses who helped in making the Bowmanville Tractor Pull such a success: Bonded Paving Hoskins Auto &Truck Repair Wallace Auto Supply Patrick Deegan (Denture Clinic) Canadian Tire (Bowmanville) Wilmanor Motors Jamieson Tire Darlington Auto Centre J.T.
