The emergence of a stadium on the agenda of Durham's regional council comes at a time when local politics usually collapses into a summer siesta. Of course, the aforementioned stadium is admittedly a long-shot. But if Durham launches a bid for such a project, then the subject could become the hottest development related issue since the Pickering Airport. However, I am getting ahead of myself. At the moment, the only suggestion of a stadium is contained in a report on the regional council agenda - a report which calls for staff to study the possibility of locating a domed stadium in conjunction with the Go-East policy of the Province of Ontario. Staff have been asked to meet with any associated municipalities and report back to council on the feasibility of this suggestion. Unless this recommendation is approved by Durham's regional council today (Wednesday, July 6), there will be no more talk about Durham coming "under the dome". But there's a good chance that elected officials will at least agree to pursue the subject. And this move should guarantee the need for debate and decision-making in the future.. Certainly there are elements of the suggestion that make sense. One cannot imagine many areas of Toronto which have all the land and facilities needed for a sports centre of this magnitude. On the other hand, there are hundreds of acres of provincially- owned land in Pickering which could provide ample space for parking and for buildings on Toronto's very doorstep. The extension of GO rail services eastward would also enhance the prospects of a stadium in Durham Region. Of course, the issue will boil down to money. If the project were some kind of steel mill or computer factory financed by private enterprise, there would be few misgivings about a Durham location. But because sports is allied with the rather volatile entertainment industry, there are additional concerns which must be taken into account. If the Durham Region's elected officials ! were to find no strings attached to this project, then they should support it. There's no doubt that a stadium would be a good thing for the local economy and a source of prestige for Durham. If, on the other hand, Durham is asked to help the project along with a few million dollars from the public purse, then alarms should ring in the minds of our elected officials. Durham should remember the nightmare of Montreal's Olympic Stadium before they dream about a similar project for their own backyard. Hi!
