Every council in the school board area will be receiving a copy of education director Doug Sifton's report to trustees trustees last week. The report replies to recent criticisms of the school system and the quality of student being produced. produced. "I hate to see a report like this wasted," Orono trustee Bill Carman told the board. "In some cases it won't be read. In other cases it can't be read." In his report Mr. Sifton says modern education is at least as good as it was 20 or 40 years ago. Studies carried carried out in the province and -across the country indicate children perform perform better in all areas than their predecessors. Quoting a Ministry of Education report by Dr. Howard Russell, Mr. Sifton pointed out Ontario and Canadian students compare favorably favorably with their counterparts counterparts in other nations. The accusation that children no longer learn as much as they once did is false, he said. Sifton admitted today's education system system has problems, but said it is coping with challenges never dreamed of 20 years ago. In the mid '40's less than half the school age children in Ontario attended high school, he said. Today, 80 per cent of potential students attend classes. This increase in the number of students lowers the standard of the final product because because of the higher number of marginal scholars. Good students are as good or better than before, he said. It is only the overall average average that has declined. The report warns against criticizing or attacking the amount of money spent on education. education. Changing times and educational requirements requirements mean new solutions must be found, said Sifton. And these answers will cost more and more money, he said. , Refusing to bear the burden of the cost of education today will mean a legacy of crime, social problems and ignorance in the future, said Sifton. "Critics of education could provide a greater service if they could acquire more than a smattering of information information and would read documented reports all the way through," said Mr. Sifton. "We could then have a constructive dialogue aimed at the improvement of education education in society." Fire Dept. Briefs FIRE LOSSES: $5,450 INJUNE Losses from fire totalled $5,450 last month, according to the June report from Newcastle Newcastle Fire Chief Jim Hayman. The report covers activities at the Bowmanville (Hall One) Fire Hall from June 1 to June 30 and includes calls received at Orono, Newcastle, and Courtice Fire Stations from May 12 to June 8. A total of 28 calls were received during the latest reporting reporting period, Pltch-ln and Keep Canada Beautiful
