On Wed., July 13th, 32 ladies from Bowmanville, Port Perry, Oshawa, Cobourg, Whitby and Port Hope competed competed for the Victoria and Grey Trophy. > Representing Bowmanville were Mabel Mavin and Marg Nicks, Hilda Simnick and Helen Millson, Vi Code and Rena Bathgate, Norma Brock and Irene Carson, and Gwen z Coombes and Mary Thomp^ son. The games got underway after a brief address of welcome welcome from Ladies President Marg Perris under hot muggy skies. The Bowmanville girls got off to a good start with Mavin winning 12 - 9, Code winning 15 - 5, Norma Brock was 14 -14, Coombes 12 - 7 with the only loss Simnick 6 -14. We should point out here that this was Hilda's first experience as a skip and as she lost to the eventual trophy winner, she did very well indeed. Disaster struck in the second game with Mavin losing 9 -18, Coombes 9 -12, Brock 6 •• 19, Coole 4 - 20, Simnick 6 -13. In the third game it was Mavin winning 13 - 11, Coombes losing 4 - 24, Brock winning 10 - 9, Coole losing 7 - 19 and Simnick winning her first game 14 -12. The team of Clarence Oke; Norma Brock and Merv Brock, lost their first game 9-15 then won th§,next two 11 -10 and 20-7 ending up with a good score of 37 plus two but not enough to get in the prize money. The third Bowmanville team of Ab Mavin lead, Mabel. Mavin, vice skip and Bryan Hughes, skip had a really . enjoyable day, beating Hunter of Oshawa 14 - 4, Morrison of Oshawa 12-9 and McMillan of Oshawa 14 - 7 ending up with a total score of 40, and winning the Brock trophy and first prize money. Second prize went to Vic Foxhall of Cobourg. Orono News Picnic Sixteen ladies of Unit No. 2 and 3 along with several ladies of Unit No. 4, enjoyed a picnic last Tuesday in Orono park. A super abundance of food was polished off and then Eileen Billings led a devotional on "Canada". Games of bingo were enjoyed by all. 'flllllllllllllllllllllllllllt' Keep Canada Beautiful Police Briefs By Donna Fairey Durham Regional Police are investigating the theft of three chain saws from a Town of Newcastle truck parked in the Works Department yard at the base of Liberty Street. The incident occurred sometime over the weekend. Thieves made off with $600 in cash following a break-in at the Alnor Earth Moving offices on Baseline Road south of Courtice. Police seized a pry bar and empty cash box at the scene to be used in the investigation of the incident. Police aborted a burglary at a West Beach cottage belonging belonging to Milton Corson of 27 Frank Street, Bowmanville. Two juveniles were apprehended apprehended during the perpetration of the crime last week.
