Wednesday, '■ August 31,198319 Drink kills Written for CP By Austin Rand Drivers between the ages of 16 and 19 have a far higher risk of dying in an accident when they drink and drive than do older drivers, says a researcher with the Ottawa-based Traffic Injury Research Foundation. Douglas Mayhew says teenagers make up only seven per cent of those with driving licences in Canada but they suffer 28 per cent of driver fatalities. Alcohol is an important factor in this elevated death rate, Mayhew says. While teenage drivers are less likely to drink and drive ' than are older drivers, they are also less able to cope with alcohol. At .05 per cent blood alcohol content (the legal limit in several provinces), the teenage drivers' risk of dying in a crash is roughly double that of older drivers. At .08 per cent, their risk of a fatal crash is triple that of other drivers, on average, and at 0.1 per cent it is nearly four times higher, says Mayhew. Contributing factors are that teenagers do more of their driving at night, they are inexperienced, they are more likely to take risks and they are more likely to be distracted by other passengers while driving, Mayhew says. A Montreal cancer specialist says it appears one form of cancer, called non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, can be transmitted from one person to another. Dr. Talk Kim says he has seen several cases in which an identical form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma occurred first in one partner partner in a couple, then in the other partner. But if such transmission does in fact occur, he says it probably requires extensive daily contact over many years. Kim is a radiation . specialist at Montreal General Hospital and an associate professor of medicine at McGill University. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma lymphoma affects the body's lymph system, particularly the lymph nodes. About 750 cases of the disease occur annually in Canada. Sixty per cent of those developing the disease die within five years after diagnosis. In an article in the journal journal Cancer, Kim described three cases of apparent transmission of the disease from one partner in a couple couple to the other. In these cases, an identical identical form of the disease occurred in both partners, ■ he says. In each case there was a similar time lag -- five to eight years -- between detection of the disease In . one partner and then the other. Since publication of the article in Cancer, Kim has encountered another "couple "couple case" of the disease in Montreal. He also has seen an identical disease occur In a step-daughter of the wife in one of the Montreal couples. In addition, Kim has been contacted by two doctors doctors and one patient who have seen similar couple cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. In the four couple cases seen in Montreal, the male was in each case the first to develop the disease, but Kim said that his is probably due simply to chance. Previous studies have indicated indicated that non-Hodgkin's lymphoma can occur in . clusters, but the cases brought forward by Kim are tne first that show patterns patterns strongly suggesting transmission, FREE 5x7 COLOR ENLARGEMENT with every C4V110. 176 1 J b processed with our custom 1 hr service OSHAWA CAMERA CENTRE 728-4631 OSHAWA 8HOPPINQ CENTRE -(ACROSSrMOM tut MHONI CfNIH||
