Sympathy of the community to Mrs. Lowes in the passing of her husband Warren, who died Wednesday, Sept. 14. The funeral was held Friday, Sept. 16, from Barlow Funeral Home, Orono. The Lowes had just recently moved from their home in Orono to Bowmanville. Bowmanville. Recent visitors at the Lome Bowins included his sister, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Fallis, Bethany, and his brother Mr. and Mrs. Mervin Bowins, Pontypool. Congratulations to Mrs. Stella Morton, Kendal on her recent achievement of completing completing her examinations in "Proficiency in Service Playing." She received the highest standing in Canada. Stella is a former organist at Orono United Church. Mrs. E. Billings, Orono, Miss Mary Jewell and Mrs. Rita Wideman, both from Bowmanville have all returned returned home after enjoying a 19-day trip through the Maritimes Maritimes and Newfoundland. The weather was ideal and the trip very successful. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Harmer and Chris, Oshawa, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Warren, Thornhill, and Mrs. Donna Sutherland and girls were all Sunday visitors at the 0. Challice's. Mr. and Mrs. Lome Bowins attended the auction sale of his sister, Mr. and Mrs. Neil Rainey, Lindsay. The Raineys have sold their farm and are retiring in Lindsay. We welcome Mr. and Mrs. James Sutherland to our fair village. They have purchased the former Hardy property on Mill Street North. Mr. and Mrs. John Killeen, Bowmanville, were last Thursday evening guests of her sister, Mr. and Mrs. 0. Challice. Birthday Party A very pleasant and enjoyable enjoyable event took place Saturday, Saturday, Sept. 17, in Orono United Church main hall, when a very large crowd gathered to wish Miss Kate Foster a happy birthday. Miss Foster taught school here in Orono for 40 years and when she retired, she moved to Oshawa. The guest of honor received lovely flowers, cards and gifts and the birthday table looked elegant elegant with a beautiful birthday cake, candles and flowers. A social time was spent reminiscing and a delightful afternoon tea, served by Orono U.C.W., greeted the many guests. Dinner Party The regular monthly dinner and evening of the 4T club met Thursday, Sept. 15, in the new dining hall of our new building. building. Approximately 54 were in attendance. The delicidus menu consisted of meat pie, mashed potatoes, beans, juice and broccoli casseroles. Co-Ordinators are Sandra Anderson and Grace Haldenby, Diocesan Synod starts with a service in St, Jame's Cathedral Cathedral on Thursday, Sept, 22 and continues through the 23rd and 24th, Judge Lovekin, with a backup of Mrs. Ruth Davidson, Davidson, will represent St, George's, and Mrs. Peggy Sawyer with backup from Doug Noble will represent St. Saviours. Baptisms - There will be a service of baptism of infants on the 11 a.m. service at St. George's. Harvest Thanksgiving will be celebrated in the church on October 2nd, with National Thanksgiving on the 9th of Oct. Contributions of fruit, vegetables and other harvest items would be welcomed by people decorating the church, Friday evening, Sept. 30 or Saturday Oct. 1st. Service of Unity An ecumenical service will be held on Sunday, October 2nd, at 3:00 p.m. in St. George's church, Newcastle. Newcastle and Orono United churches and St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic are taking part. Banns of Marriage are read for the third and final time for Michael Collyer and Sandra Stewart. Orono News On Friday afternoon, Sept. 16th, a very important event took place in Orono Medical Centre, when an informal gathering of close friends and committee members gathered to honor Dr. A. F. McKenzie. The occasion of his 70th birthday birthday and the special event of his completing over 40 years of dedicated and faithful medical service to not only our own local area but the much larger community outside. The committees in charge of this event comprised of Mrs. Ruby Staples, Mrs. Bessie Bellamy, Mrs. Jo. Barlow, Mrs. Rosie Graham, Mrs. Merle Gilbart and Mrs. Mary Rutherford. The presentation consisted of a three-wheeled, motorized yamaha bike and a cheque for over $5000.00 designated for special hospital equipment, as selected by Dr. McKenzie for Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville. Bowmanville. The monies collected were generously donated by ex-patients and friends, mindful mindful of his dedicated service to the medical needs of the communities. A lovely bouquet bouquet of flowers was presented to Daisy (Mrs. McKenzie) to close this happy event. Orono United Church News Mrs. Donna Hutton presented presented the entire Sunday School to the congregation on Sunday morning, and the children showed off their colorful banners and all received balloons. Mr. Armond Hollingsworth presented the scripture and the choir rendered the lovely anthem "Then I Met Jesus." Birthdays celebrated this week are Carlos Tamblyn on Sept. 23, and Lome Hardy on Sept. 24th. The church school needs more teachers for 6, 7, 8,9, to 15 years. Six teachers are needed immediately.
