2 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, October 19,1983 SMALL TALK By Donna Fairey May Widen Waste Site Search John Doe is a service attendant working in one of Ontario's typical business firms. He sweeps floors, dusts, empties garbage containers containers and changes lightbulbs. On staff with the same company is Jane Doe. She is an office clerk who answers the telephone, telephone, handles filing and types correspondence. correspondence. A glaring inequity is that the total on John's weekly paycheck is markedly higher than Jane's remuneration. Although it's a hypothetical situation, the matter is nonetheless nonetheless one which is old and familiar. In my mind, the issue is totally unrelated to job status comparisons. Rather, the functions performed by John and Jane are each, in their own way, essential productivity productivity areas which, in contrast, could be considered of equal value to the employer. But Jane and a legion of her working sisters are generally reminded on a weekly basis that they are members of the female species which automatically, by tradition, dictates the penalty of a smaller paycheck than their male counterparts. By and large, men aren't terribly sympathetic sympathetic to the plight of women in the workplace. workplace. After all, it's the pesky female population population which is responsible responsible for invading the labor arena ultimately creating a shortage of jobs, the downfall of the Canadian economy and numerous other irritating irritating circumstances which might have been avoided had they remained remained in the kitchen. Indeed, equal pay for work of equal value is a hot issue and getting hotter for women cur rently earning about 60 cents for every $1 paid to men. In spite of the fact that critics say the public isn't ready for equal value legislation, Hamilton Liberal MPP Sheila Copps will come out this week in defence defence of the pink collar population. She is scheduled to introduce a private member's bill in the Ontario legislature calling calling on the provincial government to endorse equal pay for work of equal value. While attempts attempts to achieve a better better balance between men's and women's wages is commendable and begs serious attention, attention, the difficulty associated associated with implementing implementing such a program program can be clearly recognized. recognized. However, equal value legislation is already working in the federal government and Quebec. Under the Canadian Human Clarke Landfill Site A committee of elected officials has given cautious approval in principle principle to plans for expansion of a landfill site in Clarke Township. The town's general purpose and administration committee voted Monday to grant approval in principle principle to the planned 100-acre landfill site, provided that all concerns of the municipality are met. One of the big rubs against introducing the concept in Ontario is that while federal legislation legislation deals chiefly with large employers, provincial legislation would apply to small companies in the private private sector. Program skeptics say that most medium and small companies companies in Ontario don't have job evaluation plans in place and that they would be cost prohibitive prohibitive to develop. Conversely, Quebec law already deals with private companies and the system is working. If it can be done next door, then it can likewise be accomplished accomplished here. In simple fairness, I say let's get on with it in Ontario. Anyone who maintains there is anything anything unreasonable about a plea for equal pay for work of equal value (regardless ofthe sex of the worker), is either irrational, insecure, insecure, male - or a combination combination of all three. A committee of Newcastle council council has decided that an independent independent group should have the responsibility responsibility of finding a permanent disposal disposal site for low-level radioactive waste. At its meeting on Monday, the town's general purpose and administration administration committee decided that this group should look at least throughout the Province of Ontario in the search for a site. The town committee took this action action as the result of Eldorado Resources Resources Limited's efforts to find a permanent site in which it can store waste materials from the existing Port Granby dump. The committee's decision will now be forwarded to town council for formal endorsement. Eldorado has indicated that it is considering four possible locations for a permanent disposal site, all of them either at or near the existing Port Granby facility. In a written report on the subject, Chief Administrative Officer Dave Johnston pointed out that it is reasonable to undertake a thorough search for a permanent waste disposal site. "However, given the fact that other companies and agencies are faced with similar problems, it is also unreasonable to expect Eldorado Resources to shoulder the entire financial burden burden of such a site search," said Mr. Johnston. The administrator also recommends recommends that council reaffirm a resolution resolution in which it urges that search for a permanent disposal site be on at least a province-wide basis. Recommendations contained in the chief administrative officer's report were endorsed at the committee committee level and will now go to council for final adoption. \ ; 4 Shopping Party Thurs., Fri., Sat. - Oct. 27-28-29 9-11 9-5 featuring Spotlight On Values Friday night until 11:00 p.m. Window Decorating Contest Lucky Costumed Shoppers Be in costume on Friday night and you could be one of several winners of $50.00 worth of "BIA Bucks", which may be redeemed at any participating merchant. 7 Sponsored by l\ IB ijîii'cTDtl i BOWMANVILLE BUSINESS CENTRE. ar\ ,./i id r 'i « H
