By Peter Parrott Hallowe'en. That's when we celebrate celebrate the year's most bizarre holiday by reverting reverting to a primitive, pagan rite as old as the rocks of Stonehenge. Not surprisingly, kids love it. Maybe they're closer to primitive, pagan rituals than their inhibited moms and dads. Hallowe'en is when the number of youngsters youngsters who appear at the door makes you wonder about all those dire predictions concerning a declining birth rate. When the kids that demand tricks or treats are about six feet tall and speak in bass voices. Or, when some of them are too small to see over their pillow cases of plunder When you wonder if Darth Vader is just a popular costume this year, or if the same kid has been lining up for treats four or five times in a row. When dentists calculate calculate the damage caused by all that sugar on the fangs of young vampires vampires or werewolves and make travel arrangements arrangements for a vacation vacation in the Rivierra. It's been a good Hallowe'en. Hallowe'en. The pumpkin got carved at the last minute and seeds are saved for roasting. By counting the candy and wagon-wheels which disappeared from the hall table I estimate that around 150 visitors bounced up to the doorstep in masks, makeup, tinfoil suits, witches hats, punk-rock hairdos, etc. etc. etc. The baby exhausted herself thoroughly by ogling the weird visitors visitors of her first Hallowe'en. Hallowe'en. She went to sleep wondering, no doubt, what kind of a world she has gotten herself into. (Never mind, I still do!) But something different different did happened this time. Today, I am ad miring a small, hand- drawn card which reads "Happy Hallowe'en". Hallowe'en". It was handed to me by one of the goblins goblins on our doorstep Monday night, after I placed a treat in a pillow pillow case and some spare change in a UNICEF UNICEF box. It was signed by some thoughtful ghoul whose face I don't even remember. remember. Maybe she was the one in the ghost's costume or the witch's hat or the ruble's cube outfit. Whoever you are, I thank you. In the past few years, we've given out enough sugar- coated treats to pay off the national debt of Cuba and this is the first time I've received something in return. On one of the greediest festive evenings evenings of the North American American year, it is nice to meet a goblin with class. Happy Hallowe'en to. you, too. Many Attend U.C.W.
