Remembrance Dinner Marked by Opening of Jim Fair Room About 700 attended the annual Remembrance dinner at Branch 178 Royal Canadian Legion on Saturday evening, prepared and served by associate members. The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, November 9,1983 11 Wins Highest Earnings Trophy 2nd Year in Row Delta Faucet Staff Donates to United Way The employees of Bowmanville's Delta Faucet plant significantly boosted the current United Way fund drive last week when a donation of $1,723 was turned over to campaign organizers. Shown above during the presentation at the Delta factory are LouAnn Birkette-Delta purchasing agent and Maurice Preston-Newcastle's United Way group chairman for industry. The donation marked the third year in which Delta employees have supported the United Way canvass. STARKVILLE NEWS The event was especially significant as it marked the official dedication of the new addition named for the late Jim Fair, who until his death, played an important role in Legion branch activities. Jim Firth recalled the history of the project that led up to construction of the new room, followed by the actual dedication and unveiling of the Jim Fair plaque by District Commander Paul Hycha, Mrs. Dot Fair and Legion Padre the Rev. Allan Haldenby. Members of Mrs. Fair's family were also present, 1-r, Larry Branigan and wife Lyn, Harvey Williams and wife Patty and at right Bill Fair and wife Bev. At the ceremony's conclusion, Mrs. Fair made an appropriate appreciation speech and Oscar Pingle presented her with a bouquet of roses. BLACKSTOCK NEWS Sorry to report that Tony Duivesteyn had the misfortune to fall from the house roof he was repairing and suffered injuries that required hospitalization. His many friends wish him a speedy recovery. Nancy and Bob Bryans attended the 25th Anniversary Anniversary of Marg and Neil Lee, Nestleton. The Bryans family helped Rick Alpe celebrate his birthday on Sunday at the farm. Hallowe'en in Blackstock was a busy but very behaved event on Monday evening. Con gratulations, kids on such fine behaviour. Bernadette (Keuning) Lute has been in St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto for two weeks and is scheduled for surgery on Wednesday. Good wishes to with her from her friends in Blackstock and area. The November 2nd meeting of the Blackstock and District Lions was their first attempt attempt at a Family Night. All members brought along their wives, children and grandchildren. grandchildren. The turn out was extremely gratify ing with approximately 75 people in attendance. Following a chicken buffet buffet supper, regular business was suspended and the meeting was turned into a night of fun and excitement for all. Two very talented lcoal people provided the evening's entertainment. Mr. Don Masterson amazed both young and old with his feats of magic and Mr. Dave Ellis entertained the group with his great singing abilities, leading the younger members in many of their favourite sing-along songs. For the second year in a row, Dianne Darch of Bowmanville was awarded the trophy for the highest highest single earnings in the Durham Region Horseback Horseback Riding for the Handicapped Association's Rideathon, last Sunday in Blackstock. Dianne collected collected a total of $712 through pledges. This is the fifth year she has participated in the annual event. The highest group earnings went to Hoskin Stables, which collected $2,552.50. In the youth division, Jacky Turkocio of Sandalwood Stables collectd $268.25, and Keith Reid of Hoskin Stables collected $148.75. Honorable mentions were given to Judy Peel who collected $437.50, and Janet Farnell who collected $319. Total pledges for the ride-a-thon amounted to $6,000. The new executive for the association is headed by President Elizabeth Peacock.
