i ) Sea Cadet Corps Third Year of Existence Bowmanville's sea cadet corps has now entered its third year of existence. Due to the excellent support of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 178 in Bowmanville, the Navy League branch, the parents and especially our cadets, we have gone from the "new kid" to placing 5th in the Eastern Ontario Area proficiency ratings for sea cadets. In the past year, our corps have taken part in parades ranging from Bowmanville's 125th Anniversary parade to Oshawa's Fiesta parade to the Sunset Ceremony parade at Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Our cadets this summer went to two week or six week camps at H.M.C.S. Quadra in British Columbia, ÇFB Borden in Barrie, H.M.C.S. Ontario in Kingston, Tillicum Sea Cadet Camp in North Bay, H.M.C.S. MicMac and CFB Cornwallis in Halifax, Nova Scotia. All travelling expenses and living expenses were paid by Dept, of National Defence. On a local note cadets who were not eligible for camp, spent 12 hours of the their time over a six week period taking extensive extensive sailing instruction and participated in a three day sailing exercise with over 80 other cadets at Pickering. One of our senior cadets took part in an exchange program with cadets from the west coast of the United States and spent some time on their ships and submarines. Sea Cadets from Bowmanville Corps practise night for regular activities and also participate their drill at the Bowmanville Legion. The Corps in special events such as parades and summer teaches practical skills, builds discipline, encour- camps. Young people interested in learning more ages a sense of responsibility and teaches all- about the Sea Cadet program are invited to con- round citizenship.
