Tyrone United Church was full on Sunday evening, November 13, 1983, to hear Elizabeth and David Craig tell about their trip to Zambia, Africa, in May 1983, where they visited Elizabeth's brother Ralph Hills, his wife Johanne and their son Matthew, (a son, Geoffrey, has been born since). The experience in Zambia was illustrated with slides which helped to translate life in that country to the understanding of the audience. The Craigs tried to convey the sense of distance, the vastness of Africa and the great size of Zambia, by stating that it took nine hours flight from the airport at London, England, to Lusaka, Zambia; approximately seven of those hours were spent flying over Africa. Then it was a two day trip of 1200 kilometers to the Training Centre at Kashinda, where Ralph and his family live and work. Zambia was described as being relative in size to the Province of Quebec. Ralph is a presbytery lay- trainer, arranging and helping to conduct courses for elders, stewards, catechumen leaders, KBBK (U.C.W.) leaders and lay preachers. Phone 623-4745 after 6 p.m. Students live at the Centre during training. Johanne is a pastoral charge minister with about thirty-five congregations spread over a very wide area. Some of those churches had not seen an ordained minister for several years, so a very large backlog of infant and adult baptisms awaited the joint effort of the Hills'. The Craig's pictures conveyed the beauty of the country; the simplicity of the life and the food, and the self sufficiency of the people were described. Ralph and Johanne were unexpectedly present on Sunday evening to meet many friends and neighbours and to graciously answer questions. At the beginning of the presentation, Joy Loveridge warmly welcomed everyone on behalf of the Outreach Committee and thanks were expressed by Church coordinator coordinator Betty Pascoe. Fellowship and lunch completed the evening. Anyone interested in the sacrament of Baptism which will take place next Sunday, please get in touch with Pastor Lafave.
