Cecil is shown here in the office of Durham's Regional Regional chairman as he signs a proclamation to officially officially start the campaign. Cecil also delivered to the chairman's office a campaign flag and a this season's first sheet of Christmas seals. Looking Looking on are Regional Chairman Gary Herrema, and Carol Collings, the fund-raising chairman. This year, the Christmas Seal campaign has an objective objective of $115,000 in the Durham Region. That's an increase of 17 per cent over last year's goal. Approximately every two hours someone is admitted to a hospital in Durham Region Region because of a breathing problem. One in every five Canadians suffers from a lung abnormality. These startling facts provide provide the impetus for the Durham Region Lung Association Association as it moves into its 1983 Christmas Seal Campaign. Campaign. The annual fund-raising drive commenced Wednesday, Wednesday, November 9, witli an official official kick-off at the office of Durham's regional chairman, chairman, Gary Herrema. On the national level, the campaign began November 1st, with the mailing of Christmas Seals to. some seven million homes. Locally, the 1982 campaign campaign raised $98,000 from contributions throughout the Durham Region. And the Association's objective this year has been raised by 17 per cent to $115,000. Carol Collings, Campaign Chairman for the Region, sees this as a reasonable ex pectation in view of the area's current economic improvement. improvement. She stresses the importance of meeting the objective. "Costs for. hospital hospital treatment of breathing ' problems in Durham were in excess of $4 million last year," she says. "The Lung Association urgently needs public support to continue local programs which do so much to prevent and alleviate alleviate these terrible diseases." diseases." The Association's community community programs arc reaching reaching more people each year. More people arc seeking help from asthma programs and better breathing courses, which give help and support to those who suffer from chronic respiratory respiratory impairment. The Lung Association's school program is in great demand, with its message of a healthy lifestyle and smoking smoking prevention. In research projects, too, the Lung Association Association is in the forefront of the battle against lung disease. Christmas Seals have been used since 1908 to raise funds to help victims of lung disease. The problem problem then was tuberculosis but today it is emphysema, lung cancer, asthma, and a wide range of occupation- linked illnesses. This annual annual campaign is the sole means of support for the Lung Association, which is not a United Way agency. Murray McLaughlan, singer, songwriter, and winner winner of six Juno Awards, is this year's honorary Christmas Christmas Seal chairman. The graphic design of Mr. Raymond Boyer has been selected for the 1983 Christmas Christmas Seal campaign. This is the fourth time that Mr. Boyer's work has been depicted depicted on Christmas Seals.
