t The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, November 16,1983 7 Flying Dutchman Bantams "Player of the Week" Bob McArthur No. 4 Left Defense Teams Deadlocked Again : The Oshawa "A.A.A." Minor Bantams are proving to be a major thorn in the side of the Flying Dutchman Toro Major Bantam hockey team. Once again, this feisty group of 13 year olds skated stride for stride, matched check for check and at times outplayed our boys, forcing the Toros to play comeback hockey to salvage salvage a 3 - 3 tie at the Children's Children's arena last Thursday. In a reversal from their last meeting, the Toros got the first goal of the game at the 10:31 mark off the stick of Brian Noble who got relays from Chris Beck and George Pithie. Oshawa nearly evened the score 29 seconds later as they caught the defense napping napping and went down on a two-man break but hit the goal post. Oshawa tied the score early in the second on a powerplay goal and then went ahead by one just a minute and a half later on a beautiful wrist shot that caught the top corner on the glove side. Bowmanville came back late in the second with just over two minutes left to tie the game on a powerplay goal by Brian Noble. Beck and Pithie again collected the assists. Two more powerplay goals were scored in the third, the first by Oshawa who then played errorless hockey until the 3:42 mark when they got a holding penalty opening the door for the Toros who capitalized capitalized 22 seconds later when George Pithie put the puck in from a scramble in front of the net to salvage the tie. Noble and Beck assisted in this final effort. Five stars to goalie David Smith who played brilliantly in net, especially in the first period to keep his team mates in the game. Webster Records First Solo Shutout On Saturday, November 12 at the Darlington arena Scott "Webby" Webster played a very steady three periods in the net, stopping a total of 16 shots, some Of them that looked looked like sure goals, to record his first solo shutout of the season as the Major Bantams defeated the Oshawa No. 2 team 6 - 0. Brian Noble scored the first two goals of the game which came only. 22 seconds apart both on hard shots from just inside the blueline. Shawn Rekker and Chris Beck got the single assists on each goal. Beck added one at the 7:37 mark on passes from Brian Noble and George Pithie to end the first at 3 - 0. With an assist from Pithie, Brian Noble scored his third goal of the game at the 11:47 mark to start off tii,. second period. Chris Beck then got his 2nd goal of the contest as he went two on one with Brian Noble and relayed a nicely placed pass into the net. George Pithie started the play on the Toros' side of the red line. Jamie Downing get the Photo by Lange's third goal of the second period and also what proved to be the final one in the game as the third period was scoreless. Assists on the play went to line mates Scott Page and Glen Campbell. Although they have been skating and checking well, this line has been in a scoring slump in the last several games and hopefully Downing's Downing's goal will give them a lift and get them back in stride. Bowmanville Toros Bombard Ajax The Toros went on a scoring spree Sunday night and potted 10 goals while stopping Ajax cold and giving the goalies their second shutout in as many games. The line of Chris Beck, Brian Noble and George . Pithie accounted for six of the 10 goals with Noble scoring four times and Beck twice. Pithie assisted five times, Beck figured in on four and Noble on two. Adding to the total were John Romano who had a nice unassisted goal and one assist, Mike Gallant with a single tally and Bob McArthur with one assist. The line of Jamie Downing, Glen Campbell and Scott Page which was mentioned mentioned in the preceding summary summary did come out of their slump in good form as Campbell Campbell scored two goals and Downing and Page each had two assists. Good work boys. Keep it up. On a night on which it was as easy to slide across the road as it was to skate across the ice, the Toros travelled to Uxbridge and won an exciting game. From the opening whistle, the Toros applied pressure to their opponents but in spite of this, quickly fell two goals behind. The first goal for the Toros • was scored by Jim Pithie, assisted by Cecil Stephenson. Later in the first period, Ian Knight equalised for the Toros. The assist went to Jim Pithie. Seconds later, Uxbridge Uxbridge went ahead again. Marc Pierce eventually tied the score for Bowmanville only to see Uxbridge come right back and score again. Early in the third period, Brad Lyons scored a short- handed goal (one of three short-handed goals Bowmanville Bowmanville scored), assisted by Phillip Green. An extremely good pass from Cecil Stephenson Stephenson sent Jim Pithie in on the Uxbridge net and the Toros took the lead for the first time in the game. Shortly after this, Michael Colborne and Ian Knight set up Jim's third goal of the night. Uxbridge scored once again before Andrew Day, on a pass from Jeff Rohr, finished off the scoring with only seconds left in the game. mm Heritage Restaurant Major Atoms Toros Have a Strong Weekend BSPS Teams Sweep Soccer Championships 'A* m m ' > ilA-v ■iWL m :Vi X unx ' s: 1Û. /Jsfm sr * A Vtir !' ! / m ~t>7 The girls team from Bowmanville Senior Public School defeated the squad from M.J. Friday night, the bad weather seemed to unsettle the boys and they lost to Port Perry 5 to 1. Heritage Restaurant's Restaurant's lone goal was scored by Chris Brown on a nifty set-up by Ryan Putnam. Although Although the team worked very hard this was one of those nights where we just couldn't convert our many good scoring scoring chances into goals. Saturday's home game against Belleville showed that hard work eventually pays off. The Toros fell behind 1 - 0 at the one minute mark when the puck took a crazy bounce off the back boards and ended up in front of the net on a Belleville Belleville stick. However, the team's pride showed, they dug their blades in and finally at the 7:15 mark, an outstanding effort by Ryan Putnam blasted blasted the puck by a bewildered Belleville goalie. Assists on the goal went to Chris Brown and Matt Doughty. This goal was the first of three for Ryan. Less than a minute later, Kent Vanderheyded gave the Toros the lead with assists going to Martin d'Entremont and Kevin Roberts. Early in the second period, Malt Doughty scored what proved to be the game winner with an assist by Geoff Goode. Ryan got his second goal from Chris Brown and his third for the hat-trick was a dazzling single handed effort. Matt Doughty also scored his 2nd goal of the game with assists from Kent and Jeff Flintoff. This was one of the strongest periods of the year for this team. The scoring was rounded off in the third period with Chris Brown scoring from Matt Doughty and Jeff Flintoff. Sunday's game proved again that perisitenl hard work does not always pay off with a win. The Heritage Rest. Toros played the tough and aggressive Ajax Majors. Ajax came out strong and tough in the first period and took a 3 -1 lead with Bowman- ville's lone goal scored, on a breakaway, by Ryan Putnam after he had been beautifully set up by Chris Brown. It became evident to Ajax that even though the referees were willing to overlook their rough play, Bowmanville would not. Consequently, they were held in check and scoreless scoreless through the second period. In the third period, the Toros showing their never say "Die" pride, scored in just 36 seconds. Corey Chambers tipped in Jeff Flintoff's blast from the point. The Toros opened the game up at this point, hoping to bury Ajax. However, the effects of the busy weekend finally showed and they couldn't penetrate the Ajax defence. They did get a goal by Sean McFadyen on another crafty pass from Chris Brown. The final score was 7 - 3 for Ajax. The Toros' goalies Jason Hiscock and Geoff Smith again played well this weekend. weekend. It is their steady play that is keeping us in the games and allowing the team to tie. and win instead of always playing catch-up hockey. Good luck next week boys as we have another busy weekend weekend ahead of us.
