On Thursday, Howard and Eileen were in Ottawa where Howard attended a meeting of the representatives of the provinces involved in hog production with the Federal govt, representatives. They were trying to hammer out a program suitable to all in which Federal, Provincial and Producers would all contribute in a tripartite stabilization program. One of the problems encountered was the top loading by some provinces of an extra amount over and above their share of the program which in essence created an extra bonus to produce more hogs than the market can handle. This creates, as is currently the situation, overproduction which drives the price down below the cost of production. An addendrum to the Haiti story. Howard informs us that almost all the "resident" hogs on the island have been destroyed with the exception of an unknown number of "wild" hogs. The island is divided into 500 sections each with a Section Chief whose responsible for the eradiation in her own. district. Already 2000 multiplier hogs have been imported - (300 from Canada and 1700 from U.S.A,) To date, none of the imported breeding swine have contacted the African Swine Fever. Howard and Eileen Malcolm left on Sunday for Quebec City for the Annual Meeting of the Canadian Swine Council. Howard has now completed his first year as President and is eligible for a second term, This is the season for Coop annual meetings. It was our pleasure this past week to attend annual meetings with attendant sumptuous dinners at Coklsprings (Grafton Branch) and at Thurlow Community Hall (Foxboro Branch). The battle of the bulge continues the next week or two. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Wilson spent last weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Jim Biggs and family in Port Elgin. Sunday visitors at Malconia were Mr. and Mrs. Bob Fick of Pickering and Mr. and Mrs. Marti Malcolm and Dionne of Omemee. Belated congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Stanley McCabe of Lotus on the safe arrival of two grandchildren within a week to their daughter Sylvia and Beverley - one at Cobourg Hospital and one in Red Deer Alta. The greatest coincidence was however that both babies weighed in at the same weight exactly - both lbs. and ozs. Yclverlon U.C.W. Due to this diet and unclean water they have many eye diseases. Over there $20 of our money supplies enough Vitamin A for 1 child for 1 year. In a country where it takes 1 hours' wages to buy 1 egg they need much support as they feed the children lunch at school.
