Couple Visit Pontypool in Wales PONTYPOOL (Intended for last week) The regular ten o'clock Pontypool United Church service had something special added to it today. At the conclusion of worship, our Minister, Reverend John Lindsay asked Mr. and Mrs. Ken MacKenzie to come forward and make a presentation to Manvers Reeve Mr. George Neals. He accepted this on behalf of the residents of Pontypool community, as a gesture of friendship from the citizens of Pontypool in Wales. Mr. and Mrs. MacKenzie have lately returned from a holiday in Great Britain and while there they called at Pontypool Town Hall. They received a very warm welcome from the officials there, and brought back to Canada the items which were displayed to the members of our congregation. These included a plate inscribed Borough of Torfaen, and also a letter of greeting which Mr. Neals read aloud. Pontypool, Wales is a City of 90,000 population - so we have a bit of "growing" to do before our village equals that. Early in the New Year, there will be an opportunity for everyone to view the plate, letter, pictures and other information relating to our "sister" city. These will be displayed in our Community Hall at a time to be announced later. We are sure many people will find them of interest. There have already been suggestions about an exchange of pictures and information between the two "Pontypools". This is not the first time we have had contact though. Mr. Richardson told us that during the war - a sum of money was raised in our Community, and then sent in aid of Pontypool Wales. Long time residents will remember Mr. John Payne and his report of visiting there and enjoying Pontypool's warm hospitality. Reverend Lindsay and Reeve Neals expressed appreciation to the MacKenzie's for their thoughtfulness and effort in arranging to share their experience with all of us. We hope that sometime in the future we may welcome guests from Pontypool, Wales with as much enthusiasm and friendliness as they have displayed towards Canadian visitors. Jim McMullen, an employee of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (formerly Dept, of Highways) for the past 35 years, retired this past week. Jim's position as Patrolman Hwy. 115 has been filled with Allan Bowins now in charge. Fellow employees at the local depot presented him with a purse. We are sorry to hear that Gordon Britton is back in Bowmanville hospital again, Beulah Forrest has recently returned home from hospital. Jim and Connie Rombough, who reside in Pinewoods Estates, opened up a variety store in the village last Friday morning at nine o'clock. The store situated on the west side of Pontypool's main street, carries a large stock - clothing included. We wish the Romboughs success in their enterprise. With the opening of a restaurant and now a new store, Pontypool's main thoroughfare is looking up ! Mrs. Charlie Fee of neighbouring Cartwright has been in Intensive Care in Oshawa General Hospital. Mrs. Lloyd Ransbury was also admitted to the Oshawa hospital last Sunday. We trust that both ladies will soon recuperate and be able to return to their respective homes. Alex Joncas received word last week that his sister, 94 years of age, had passed away in Maine. Our sympathy to the Joncas family! Mr. and Mrs. William Meyer, former residents in Pinewoods Estates, are now living on the 6th line - 1st house east of Hwy. 35 on the north side (former Garnet Porter residence). The Meyers deal with antiques. A few years ago they had their valuables displayed in a building on the Richardson Nursery property. The Meyers are busy renovating and when finished will have a beautiful showplace. They welcome inquiries from anyone interested in antiques. This Friday, Nov, 18th, is the date of the Pot - Luck Supper and Euchre in the Ballyduff Community Hall. The supper commences at 5:30 p.m. and proceeds are for the upkeep of the hall. Mrs. Jim Bedford has had her mother, Mrs. Belsey of Oshawa staying with her for the past week. Mrs. Belsey is recuperating following eye surgery. Congratulations to Mr. Bert Frape who recently became a grandfather for the first time! His son, Dr. Shawn Frape and daughter-in-law, Dr. Norwyn Frape of Waterloo are the proud parents of a baby girl, Erin Adrienne. Keith Dewar is at the Golden Rule Masonic Lodge in Gravenhurst on Monday and Tuesday. Keith is a member of the Firefighters' Degree Team. Robert and Liesel Pfeiffer had as their house guest for ten days, Christal Honecker now of Munich, Germany. Christal left for home last Thursday. My neighbour, Helen Corny, and I had the privilege of meeting this very interesting lady and spending two hours with her before she left for her homeland. She is physically handicapped, but she doesn't consider herself handicapped. Several years ago, while living in the United States, she lost her left arm to the elbow and the fingers and thumb on her right hand when she was struck by a revolving airplane propeller. Today, she drives all over without any problem. In fact, before she arrived at the Pfeiffers, she had driven to and from Chicago. She, too, is a victim of cancer and had a breast removed a few years ago. She owned a beautiful home in Florida (she could watch the space shuttles from her kitchen window) but, when her doctor told her last December that she had cancer of the liver and that her days were numbered, she sold her home and went back to Germany to be with other, members of her family. Her health has not deteriorated any during the past year and today she is enjoying life to the utmost. She is truly an inspiration to all who know and meet her. Harry and Frances Van Wieringen are very happy to have a sister of Harry's from Holland here for a visit for the next three weeks. Top bowler on Monday was Diane Adams with a single of 240 and a double of 403.
