The United Way fundraising campaign for 1983 is half over and volunteers report they have raised half of their goal of $1,595,000. Organizer's of the campaign are confident that the goal will be reached by the end of the month. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Krukkert of Orono who celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on November 12th with a dinner and dance held at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Newcastle. The Argyle Citadel Songsters were guest performers performers on Saturday evening, November 19, when the Salvation Army offered a concert of sacred music at the Liberty Pentecostal Church, in Bowmanville. The only league loss suffered suffered this season by the Buckham Transport Toros was at the hands of Oshawa. On Saturday, Saturday, November 12 the two teams went at a rematch played at Darlington Arena. Neither team was able to score in the first period although although both sides had chances in good end to end hockey. Early in the second period, the Toros took advantage of a power play situation to notch the first goal of the game. Dean Baumhauer hit the net with Doug Lever picking up the lone assist. Oshawa came right back to even things up before Jeff Woodlock scored an unassisted goal to regain the Toro lead. The visitors once again evened the score before the second ended, this time on the power play. Neither team could get the go ahead marker with the game ending 2 - 2. The weekend of Nov. 18, 19, 20 saw the Buckham squad travel to Parry Sound for their first tournament of the year. Win Consolation The Buckham Transport Major Pee Wee Toros took part in a Tournament in Parry Sound the weekend of November November 18 - 20. The boys played some great hockey and were rewarded with the Consolation Championship. Bramalea provided the opposition opposition in the first game. The Toros had a little trouble getting getting untracked against this strong MTHL squad and found themselves down 3-0 after two periods. Bowmanville finally got it together in the third, outscoring the Bramalea Bramalea team 3 - 2 on the strength of Jeff Woodlock's hat trick. However, it was too little too late as they went down to a 5 - 3 defeat. Assists on Jeff's goals were earned by Dean Baumhauer with two and Steve Smith. This opening round loss relegated our boys to the consolation side of the tournament. Lockerby Pee Wees from Sudbury provided little competition competition to a fired up Bowmanville Bowmanville squad in the second game. Derick Biss and Scott Hanthorn earned a shutout as the Transporters exploded for La Leche League Meeting. Checkers Variety Atoms Lose and Win on Weekend The Bowmanville Minor contest with both clubs show- Atom Toros, sponsored by Checkers Variety, played a pair of games on Saturday, the first one against Trenton Major Atoms in an O.M.H.A. League game and the second contest played in Orono against their Atom club. In the game played at Darlington Darlington Sports Centre, the Checkers Variety lads dropped dropped a 4 - 1 decision to the visitors from Trenton in a game that neither team seemed seemed to want to win. The visitors struck for their first goal at the 1:19 mark of the opening period. They added one more in the period to lead it 2 - 0. Trenton picked up their third marker early in the middle stanza before the Toros' Matt Dykstra tallied for his team. The assists went to Steve Desmedt and Tyler Stokes. Trenton scored the only goal of the third period, this one coming at the 1:56 mark. Paul Zwicker in the Toro net made several good stops in a losing cause. Edge Orono 3 - 2 On Saturday evening, the Checkers Variety Toros journeyed to Orono for an exhibition encounter with their Atoms. In the Consolation semifinals semifinals the Toros met North Bay. This was the most exciting exciting matchup of the tournament tournament as both teams were evenly matched, playing good end to end hockey. After a scoreless first period where both teams were stymied by strong goaltending, North Bay hit the net early in the second. Twenty-four seconds later Tony VanHoof scored from Steve Smith to knot things up. Thirty seconds after Tony's goal, Jeff Woodlock scored on an unassisted effort to give the Toros the lead. The rest of the game had everyone on the edges of their seats as North Bay tried for the equalizer. With two minutes left in the game, the boys from the North tied it up. With overtime looming looming just ahead, the Toros dug down deep. With thirty-three seconds left on the clock, Dean Baumhauer scored an unassisted unassisted goal to send the Toros to the consolation championship. The host club of Parry Sound also reached the consolation consolation finals. This was especially exciting as our boys had been billetted with families families from Parry Sound. The teams exchanged goals in the first period with Dean Baumhauer Baumhauer scoring the Toros' goal from Jeff Woodlock and Doug Lever. The teams played scoreless hockey throughout the second. The Truckers finally wore down the local boys in the third, outscoring them 6 -1 and taking the game 7-2. All the boys deserve congratulations congratulations on bringing home the Consolation Trophy. They displayed good teamwork and hustle on the ice and conducted conducted themselves in fine fashion off the ice. Congratulations boys.
