King Garden Oldtimers Experience Tough Going in Sudbury Tourney Women's Institute Discusses Drug Abuse fill By Bob Sheridan Because of our fine record in past tournaments, we were placed in the top category with the best "A" teams in Northern Ontario. This was the Sudbury Centennial Tournament. Art Hester played goal and was superb in all four games. We met Chelmsford Oldtimers in the first game and were defeated 4-2. Ron Clemens opened the scoring at the second mark of the first period batting in his own rebound after receiving a pass from George Sainsbury who had been set up by Bob Marjerrison. Joe Balson scored on a sharp back-hand that caught the corner of the net with assists going to Gerry Henderson and Roger Shingler. In the second game, Star Bottling of Sudbury defeated ùs 4-1. Our erstwhile goaltender, Grant Wright took a pass from Bob Sheridan in the crease and drove the puck home from short range. Bob Hellam also assisted on the play. ■- Our third defeat came at the hands of the Sault Ste. Marie Oldtimers, 11-4. Roger Shingler scored a goal, assisted by Grant Wright and Bob Hellam. Our three other goals in this game were credited to Ray Crombie. Ron Clemens gave Ray a pass at the point and Ray drove a perfect shot high into the net for his first. Joe Balson then passed to Bob Deblois to the left of the net. Bob cruised in front and outfought two defenders to hit Roy with a quick pass as he moved in from the right point. Ray then drove a hard shot in from 20 feet. Ray's final goal came on a unique play. Dan Girardi gave Bob Deblois a good pass high in the slot. Bob fired a hard shot which deflected in from Ray's thigh as he screened the goaltender. It is ironic that Ray who was obviously the offensive star of the game, received no tangible reward for his efforts except a great blue bruise. In the final game, we bowed to North Bay 5-1. Our only goal in this game was scored by Grant Wright on a rebound from the boards behind the net. Joe Balson had just missed when he was set up by, an excellent pass from Bob' Marjerrison point blank in front of the goal. Representatives of the Pinewood Centre and the Addiction Research Foundation visited Bowmanville Bowmanville on Wednesday, November 16, to discuss drug abuse at a meeting sponsored by the Women's Institute. The title of the program was "It's just your nerves" which suggests some of the difficulties in coping with alcohol and drug problems. problems. Shown here with a chart used during the Approximately one-quarter one-quarter of all women aged 21 to 34 suffer from some form of alcohol dependency, according according to statistics from one of the speakers attending attending a meeting of Women's Institutes held last Wednesday Wednesday in Bowmanville. The meeting, which took place at the Bowmanville Lions' Centre, included a three-member panel which spoke about treatment of young people and adults having drug abuse problems problems as well as the general topic of drug awareness. Eleanor Caesar, a community community educator from the Pinewood Centre, in Oshawa, said in an interview interview last week that there's an increased emphasis placed on prevention of alcohol alcohol and drug abuse. "We're starting to focus a lot more on prevention rather than strictly treatment," she said. However, the Pinewood Centre continues to offer a residential four-week program program for persons refered to the centre, by physicans, industry, industry, family members, or themselves. She noted that women face problems today which may contribute to alcohol or drug problems. At Pinewood, a lifestyle approach is recommended. This includes relaxation techniques, nutrition, proper exercise, communications communications skills, and skills in Heritage House Major Atoms Drop Close Game to Whitby B's The Heritage House Major Atoms dropped a disappointing game to Whitby - Brooklin "Bs" 6 to 5 on Thursday night. The Toros took a 3-0 lead in one and a half minutes, on goals by Matt Doughty assisted by Martin D'Entrimont and Corey Chambers and 2 unassisted goals by Sean McFadyen. At this point the team seemed to think that they could forget our game plan, and try to build up their personal statistics. We did get two more goals, Matt got his second from Corey, and Martin got his first goal of the season on a nice set-up from Matt and Greg White. Final score "6-5 for Whitby" the gamble didn't work. Friday night, we saw a different Heritage House Toro team play against Peterborough. The Toros dominated the 1st period and led 3-1 on 2 unassisted goals from Matt Doughty and one from Kent Vanderheyden, assisted by Sean McFadyen. The determined Peterborough team would not give up however and they outscored the Toros 2-1 and the score was now 4-3 for our guys. The Toros' goal was scored by Ryan Putnam and assisted by Sean McFadyen. In the third period, the Toros regained their poise, although there was no scoring in this period, the Toros played well and earned the 4-3 victory in a very exciting game. WHITE CANE BOWLERS Partially Blind Fern Johnson 191, Randy Skelton 120, Rick Adams 209, Pat McConnell 204, Herb Wohlgemuth 215, Marg Anthony 172. Totally Blind Mary Hogervorst 160, Tom Scero 134. Saturday's game was at home, in the Toros' bull pen against the league leading Cobourg team. Although the Toros lost this one 6-2 we played well and showed the team has heart and will not give up. After falling behind 4-0 the Toros dug in and showed Cobourg that this game was not going to be a rout. The Toros' first goal was set up on a beautiful single handed effort and a pin point pass by Corey Chambers to Geoff Goode who stuffed the puck past the Cobourg goalie. Our second goal was scored by Matt Doughty who tipped in a good shot from the point from Kevin Roberts. Our goalies again played well in this game and we are looking forward to playing Port Hope next Saturday at 2 p.m. in Darlington Sports Centre.
