Hold First Advent Sunday WESLEYVILLE Sunday morning's beautiful weather saw the usual attendance attendance at Welcome United Church with the service conducted conducted by the Rev. Gordon Rutherford. The communion table held an arrangement of evergreens, gold and violet ribbons and four slender violet coloured candles. This was the first Sunday of Advent and as is the custom in this church, the special devotion is provided provided by members of a family. Mr. and Mrs. D. Franke, Steven and Debbie were in charge on Sunday morning. Mrs. Margo Franke read the explanation of these Advent Sundays. Violet colour represents represents repentance and prepara- ' tion for the coming of Christ which we now celebrate at Christmas. Mr. Franke told of the first gift, Joy, the gladness you show when you smile, and that joy and happiness should be kept throughout the year. Debbie lit the first candle and the scripture story of the good tidings was read by Steven. Debbie closed with prayer and the congregation sang "Joy to the World." Rev. Rutherford's sermon continued from Old Testament records, this one about Gideon, who, like Moses, did not feel himself equal to the task he was asked to do. He had to be satified that God was with him by seeing three miracles. Convinced then that if God were with him he was able, he accepted leadership of the army. The choir's anthem was "Lo, how a rose has blossomed." blossomed." Just naming the choir's anthem gives little indication of the inspirational part it plays in the service of worship. worship. The offering was received received by Allin Osborne and Ross Bamsey. There was a coffee hour following the service and no less than three short meetings of groups, so it was a busy hour. The sesquicentennial committee had to make a decision concerning the design of the commemorative plate; the U.C.W. had been asked to assist with an activity for Old Tyme Christmas, and the Sunday school teachers and officers had to make decisions regarding upcoming events. The plate was planned, the ladies were glad to assist with O.T.C. and Sunday school discussed discussed the white gift service.
