[ Letters to t/ie Editor ) Cowan Jr. C. Eagles Chalk Up Two More What Solutions Are There? Wins for Total of Sixteen The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, November 30,1983 Boyle Bantam Selects Win Against Baker Park Dear Sir, In the Statesman edition of Nov. 23rd "Small Talk" commented on the film "The Day After". The writer seemed disappointed that the program "would not stir nations into a resistance movement against the nuclear arms race." Her rather cynical reason being that we are bombarded by both real and fictional horror on a frequent basis. Maybe this rationale could be considered typical, especially by those who have not experienced any exposure to potential acts of aggression beyond their control. For some time there have been many news items about Cruise Missiles and Peace Marches. Like many others, I changed stations. ! I watched "The Day After" quite convinced that my attitude would be similar to "Small Talk", v It was not to be. It made me remember. Remember the closing of the Berlin Wall. Remember debating with my peers at age ; eighteen whether we would live to be twenty one. Remember sitting at a German east/west check point for !two hours without news, after armed personnel had marched off my husband ... Remember a Registered Nurse on the next street, who believing a nuclear war was possible, acquired enough lethal doses of morphine to administer to her six children should they suffer from radiation sickness. This was her emotional safeguard against the possibility of watching them die a slow and painful death. Europe, geographically is small. There is no place to hide. Here in Canada there has been a wonderful freedom from fear for me, and perhaps all of us, until, for some, Cruise Missiles emerged. This fall, when Margaret Thatcher was here, I still supported weapon deployment and the actions of our governments. Since then, some Britons fear America could follow up Grenada with intervention in Nicaragua. Thatcher does not think they will but adds hastily "I did not believe the U.S. would invade Grenada in that way." Now she has doubts. The West Germans are haunted by the Pentagon and White House pronouncements about "limited nuclear war and the ability to win such wars". On whose territory? It seems that President Reagan is now seen as a gun toting cowboy who shoots first and asks questions later and who does not comprehend the difference between a six shooter and a nuclear warhead. Many will continue to believe such statements and portrayals are fiction. Those who believe the contrary, are struggling to find answers or joining Peace Movements. I am not aware that there are any missiles in Ontario. How would people react if the government approved their location, thus making us into a target for the other side. Could this happen? The Ontario Government voted last week AGAINST keeping us nuclear free. Is this a first step towards the deployment of weapons? Mr. Mulroney recently gave the impression that he will support the American political slogan "My country my right", and said "If our friends need the benefit of the doubt from time to time, so be it; I am going to do it." Do what? Support the actions in Grenada and perhaps missile deployment in Canada? What solutions are there? In my humble opinion the answer does not lie alone with the simplistic; disarmament. Public opinion must recognize the overwhelming importance of pursuing POLITICAL STABILITY. We must acknowledge political leaders who Recognize what our current circumstances require. We must urge all our elected representatives to review our security and protect it. We have the ballot box. Military strength can coexist with human understanding and we must urge our leaders to improve the international climate and not to blindly follow President Reagan's view of the Soviets as the "embodiment of all evil". Compassion for other points of view, knowledge, understanding, and communication are above all essential. In conclusion, it would appear that the film, technical poor as it may have'been, along with "Small Talk" dug this Ostrich Head out of the sand. Sincerely, Ann Cowman Our Gift to You...
