This is a very attractive attractive flower and gift shop in our business section ana many favorable comments were heard from the customers. The early customers received an apple blossom corsage, which of course is our Town of Newcastle emblem. The family of Mrs. Gladys Gamsby held their early Christmas family get-together on Sunday, Dec. 4, in the form of a dinner party at the Flying Dutchman, Bowmanville. Guests were present from Toronto, Orillia, Bowmanville, Bowmanville, Colborne and Orono. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Kimmett and family, Lindsay, Mrs. E. Billings and Mrs. Dorothy Bailey were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Bailey and boys. The dinner was in honor of Carl Kim- mett's birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Neil Rainey, Lindsay, were recent visitors with her brother, Mr. and Mrs. Lome Bo wins. Mr. and Mrs. 0. Challice and Barry were Sunday dinner dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Murray Brown and girls, Peterborough. Mr. and Mrs. Orville Chatterton hosted the "Chapman" family reunion on Sunday, with approximately 35 members in attendance. Town Hall Card Party A card party was held in the Town Hall on Wed., Nov. 30 with a good crowd in attendance, attendance, winning as follows: High lady - Hilda Caswell. The next card party will be Wed., Dec. 14 at 8 p.m. Orono United Church News The lighting of the Second Advent Candle was given by members of the Explorer group and their leader, Mrs. Marlene Ross. Donna Hutton gave an excellent, excellent, illustrated story of the Christmas present, and Ray Dickson led in the reading of the Psalms and scripture. The choir anthem "The First Noel" and Christmas carols were sung throughout the service. service. Beautiful poinsettias were placed at the front of the church and were gifts from the U.C.W., The Flower Shop, and Orono Horticulture. The Sacrament of Communion Communion was celebrated at this service. Birthdays celebrated this week are Archie Hoy, Dec. 6, Wendy and Wanda Hutton, Dec. 6, and Joyce Gray, Dec. 9. Members of the Sunday School presented their special Nativity figurines, made by them, to the manger scene at the front of the church. The very attractive stable was a previous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ullmann, Orono South. Remember to get your tickets early for the Oshawa Festival Singers Concert on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Newcastle United Church. Guest soloist is Miss Shelley Gray. Orono United Church is again sponsoring needy families in our area and this year there are four families. Our Sunday Schools here and in Kirby are organizing and distributing the white gifts this year. Exciting Trip Mrs. Leila Werry and Mrs. Thelma Gilbank have returned returned home from their trip to Tahiti, Australia, New Zealand, Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii. Some of the highlights of their very wonderful trip included waiting waiting for long overdue airplanes over and over again; being delayed in Tahiti for nine hours, as a result of violence with the hotel workers' strike; stranded half-way up the Atherton Tableland, by train, because someone didn't fill the engine with oil (sound familiar? ) ; waiting at airports airports to go through customs and immigration and to claim luggage. They were entertained entertained by the Royal Overseas League in New Zealand. All in all they report an exciting and interesting tour under the very capable leadership leadership of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Rickard, Port Perry, brother of Mayor Garnet Rickard. Christmas Dinner A very good attendance at the pot-luck dinner held on Thursday noon, Dec. 1, in the I.O.O.F. Hall, when the Orono Sr. Citizens held their Christmas Christmas party. Mrs. Doris Wannan and Mrs. Edith Taylor conducted the business portion of the meeting, and then everyone enjoyed their gift exchange. Following this, cards were enjoyed by everyone present. The lucky winners were - High lady - Myrtle Wood, Low lady - Alma Watson, High man - Grace Cochrane (playing as a man), Low man - Carlos Tamblyn. Lucky Bingo winner - George Carson. Our next meeting will be held Jan. 5th, 1984 at 1:30 p.m. U.C.W. Executive Meeting The meeting was held Monday afternoon at the home of treasurer Mrs. Doreen Wood. The ladies enjoyed a delicious dessert tea and the president, Lois Brown, welcomed welcomed everyone. The secretary, Marie Tamblyn, gave the minutes of the previous meeting and Doreen gave the very encouraging encouraging financial reports. The various conveners gave reports reports on the year's activities and several thank you letters were read out. Plans were drawn up for the Christmas supper and party on Thurs day, Dec. 15, at 6 o'clock. Plan to attend this special event in the U.C.W. The directors of Durham County Sr. Citizens Lodge held their annual meeting in the new hall, last Wednesday evening, Nov. 30, with a good attendance. Mr. Ray Stewart chaired the meeting and the report of the financial affairs was given by the auditor from Ward Malette Chartered Accountants, Whitby. A social time was enjoyed, following the meeting.
