Brown of the Royal Canadian Legion, Bowmanville. She was placed 2ncf in their Remembrance Day Essay contest. Mr. and Mrs. Earle McEwen were luncheon guests with Mr. and Mrs. Don Vinkle on Saturday. They were visiting from Peterborough. Mr. and Mrs. Ron Burley of Newcastle were callers in the afternoon. Sympathy is expressed to the families and friends of the late Mrs. Roy McKay of Bronte and to the late Mrs. Margaret Stacey of Bowmanville. Mr. and Mrs. Reid Wood, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wood of Newcastle and Mr. Floyd Wood and Miss Leslie Mohun of Oshawa were guests at a family Christmas dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Challice at Cavan. Another progressive euchre party is planned for Friday, Dec. 16th in the Hall. Everyone welcome to attend. Mrs. Mary Wade of Barrie spent a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Henderson and on Tuesday evening the ladies with Mrs. Emma Ruthven of Port Hope attended the Past Matrons Christmas Party of the Eastern Star at Bowmanville. The U.C.W. will hold their Christmas meeting at the Sunday School on Wednesday, December 21st beginning with a pot luck ham dinner at six Contract Awarded To Widen Hwy. 115 o'clock. An exhange of $1.50 gift with Marlene Stacey's group in charge. All people who have made this year a success are invited to attend. Mr. and Mrs. Melville Jones and Mrs. Bea Jones had dinner on Tuesday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Brian Stripp and Adam of Port Granby. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Clarke of Bethany were callers on Sunday with Mr. Don Vinkle. A bus load of 40 passengers attended the 1983 program of the Living Christmas Tree at the People's Church, Torono, on Sunday afternoon. They were entertained by Christmas carols and songs, breathtaking scenes involving thousands of lights. Before the service and at intermission several carols were sung by the congregation, under the direction of Mr. David Williams. Opening remarks and prayer by Dr. Paul B. Smith. Guest artists included Beth Davis, Ann Perkins Gibbs, Raymond Gibbs and Ken Carter. Inez and Wallace Boughen entertained over 200 people in Newcastle Community Hall Saturday evening to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. anniversary. The evening was spent in dancing to the Ding-a- ling orchestra and a socialable time. Donna Robbins on behalf of Mr. Sam Cureatz presented a framed letter of congratulations^ taking the happy couple by surprise. Before the luncheon was served, Rev. R.C: White of Oshawa who had married them, presented the blessing. They received many gifts, cards and plants. They both made fitting responses and Inez introduced the wedding party. We all wish them many more years of wedded bliss. Church service, greeters were Doris and Duane Chrysler. The choir anthem was Come, Good People. Mr. and Mrs. Michael Dengis were welcomed with Mrs. Bea Jones assisting. They were transferred from the Centennial Rouge Church of Highland Creek. Dorothy and Jeff Stapleton with Diane Langstaffe and girls presented the Lighting of the 3rd Advent Candle, Joy with Jeff lighting the candle. The sermon was entitled "Four women - Four Promises Accepted." Mrs. Ona Carlaw of Warkworth was a luncheon guest on Saturday with Mrs. Bea Jones. St, Joseph's Students Raise 9 1,400 with Fruit Sale A contract to widen the southernmost portion portion of Highway 115/35 from two to four lanes was recently awarded by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications. The project covers a three-mile stretch of road from Highway Two to Mill St. EOT Construction, an Oakville company, has been awarded the contract contract and is expected to begin work in mid-May. The completion date is June of 1985. ■ Future phases of construction construction include the widening of the highway highway to four lanes from Mill St. to Taunton Rd., and from Taunton Rd. as far as Enterprise Hill. The funds will be used to help purchase computer equipment for the school. The oranges and grapefruits were sold by all students, with grade six pupils assigned the job of unloading them and sorting them last Fri day. Parent volunteers also provided assistance. Some of the grade sixes are shown here during the sorting operation. Close to 500 cases of the citrus fruits have been sold by students at St. Joseph's.
