Eighteen members of the Willis family celebrated the fortieth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Willis Sr. by taking the honoured couple out to dinner on Sunday, Dec. 11th at the Dutch Oven, Orono. Residents of Pontypool and community extend their congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Willis. Congratulations also go to Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Cain who were 59 years married on Saturday, Dec. 10th. We trust they will be able to celebrate many more anniversaries. Keith and Dorothy Dewar spent several days in Oshawa this past week. They attended the funeral of a very close friend and then spent a few days with the bereaved. Mr. Kenneth Maguire of Haliburton spent the weekend with his daughter, Donna Bryant, and family. While here he visited his grandson, Kevin Bryant, a patient in Oshawa General Hospital. Kevin has been hospitalized for the past week having leg surgery. Russell Hunt, son of Wayne and Dale Hunt is in hospital in Toronto for a couple of days or so. Russell is undergoing minor surgery. His parents hope to have him home on Tuesday. Fifty members of the Pontypool Keenagers gathered in the Pontypool Community Centre last Saturday night for a Christmas dinner and social evening of cards and dancing. A delicious turkey dinner had been prepared for the group by Peggy Cassibo and daughter, Mrs. McDonald. At the regular morning service on Sunday in Pontypool, Paula Bryant received a Bible from the Sunday School for memorization. Without any warning, Rev. Lindsay asked Paula to say "The Twenty- third Psalm." Paula's grandfather, Mr. Maguire, was in the congregation to see her receive the award presented by Sunday School Superintendent, Dorothy Turner. Thomas More Parish and the Pontypool United Church joined together last Sunday evening for their annual Christmas Carol Service. The service, commencing at 7:00 p.m., opened with children from both congregations holding lit candles and singing "When Lights are Lit on Christmas Eve" and "The Little Drummer Boy" with Robin Fisk playing a drum. Nellie Michelle rendered "O, Holy Night" and a joint choir of 12 ladies and gentlemen sang "We Hail Thee Now, Lord Jesus." The service was divided into six sections, Expectancy, The Expected Moment Arrives, Announcement, Invitation, Response and Commissioning. Several carols were sung in sequence - organ accompaniment accompaniment with some, guitar with others. Jim Quirk assisted with the reading of Scripture passages. There was a sharing of traditions with Annie Joncas, representing St. Thomas More Parish in Father Walsh's absence, explaining the Lighting of the Wreaths in their church and Rev. Lindsay giving the meaning of the same in the United Church. The Lighting of the Christ Candle was performed by Annie Joncas and Shaun Ratcliffe. During the service Fran Ratcliffe, Bernie and Joe Harwood^ Cindy Rom toughs Darlene Muller and Peter Miller sang "Hail Mary, Gentle Woman!" with Fran and Joe providing guitar accompaniment. For the offering, those present came forward and placed their givings beside the Creche at the front of the church. The Commissioning by Rev. Lindsay was "Be not afraid, for behold I bring you good news of a great joy, which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David, a Saviour who is Christ the Lord." All joined heartily in singing "Go Tell It On The Mountain." Tom and Nettie Aiken were guests of Nettie's mother, Mrs. Edmonds, last Thursday at the Chelsea Inn, Toronto at a Retired High School Teacher's Dinner.
