"Everybody" "Everybody" drinks and "everybody" "everybody" drives and "everybody" "everybody" does both at least occasionally. So what? What these people are unaware of is the tremendous amount of destruction that is caused by drinking and driving. Every year drunk drivers are responsible responsible for: 27,000 - 30,000 fatalities of one every 20 minutes $7.3 billion economic loss. This is nearly $20 million a day. Drunk driving laws in the United States are among the. most lenient in the world. The way other 1 countries handle drunk drivers: In Finland a drunk driver can get up to five months in jail with any amount of alcohol alcohol in his system. Hard labor is added if injury or death is involved. In Bulgaria, there is a 10 year minimum jail sentence for any fatality. In Norway and Sweden there is an automatic jail sentence. sentence. In Australia the driver's name is printed in the local papers under the heading "He's drunk and in jail." South Africa has a maximum maximum 10 year prison sentence and or $2,800 fine. In San Salvador the drunk driver is executed by a firing squad. In Turkey, the drunk driver is taken 20 miles away from his car and forced to walk back under guard. If you have even tried to walk 20 miles while drunk you know that you are probably better off being caught in San Salvador. The concerts will take place in Newcastle Community Hall on Sunday evenings at 7:30 p.m. The four concerts lined up for the present series are the Climax Jazz Band on February February 19; Entracte (a guitar and flute duo) on March 25; Marc Widner, pianist on May 6; and the Horseless Carriage Men (Oshawa Barbershop Chorus) on May 13. The Climax Jazz Band has played in over 50 cities and towns in Ontario, and has visited Vancouver and Montreal. Montreal. It has played at festivals in Sacramento, California; Denver, Colorado and New Orleans, Louisiana and in many jazz clubs in 11 states. The band appeared in the Dryboughs Edinburgh Inter- Yelverton Youth Group Takes White Gift Service White Gift Service was observed observed on Sunday, Dec. 11th with the Youth Group of the combined Charge taking the service and very efficiently too. The young people are to be commended for their efforts. To try to conduct a service in such pandemonium and disorganized confusion deserves a real vote of thanks from the congregation. Lisa Johnson and Clifford Wright conducted the service very capably and were ably assisted assisted by the cast of the young peoples group who also provided provided the choir for the day and acted as ushers as well. A White Gift service was also part of the agenda in the Sunday School as the children donated many gifts for children children less privileged than themselves themselves and special gift envelopes envelopes were contributed for Missions purposes. Next Sunday, the service will be conducted by Mrs. Hazel Gray's Sunday School class. Bring your earplugs and come and enjoy the service, particularly particularly the unrehearsed portion of it as the wee tykes ad lib their lines. Christmas festivities by one local family at least were observed a little early for the Moore family connection prior to Mary and Balfour Moore chucking our lovely snowy and blowy winter weather for their mobile home in Florida. Pleased to report that Mr. Leo Cramyer has successfully undergone a repair job which has Cleared the artery on one side of his heart. Hopefully, a similar plumbing job can be done on the other side which would remove any need of a future bypass operation. Sorry to report that Mrs. Doris Rowan's kid brother Doug Jackson has suffered a heart attack (or was it a stroke? ) and has been in intensive intensive care in Oshawa General off and on since.
