St. Amand started the next goal, passing to Tom McLaughlin who sent Neill in alone on the left wing. Neill blasted a shot into the top of the next line. Whitmarsh set up Neill for the third goal. The second game was against Trenton, and wasn't decided until an overtime period. It wasn't until midway day of. in the second period that Tren- 1 ton struck for .the first goal. Up until that time it was a goaltenders battle, with Phil Bird coming up with some big stops. The Toros started a flurry of third period goals when McLaughlin scored from Neill and Whitmarsh. McLeod made it 2 - 1 from Andrew Davey, then Dawson made it 3 - 1 from Cruess and St. Amand. There were only two minutes left in the game and it looked like the Toros had it won, but Trenton scored two goals in 25 seconds to tie it. McGregor Bantams End Busy Week A quick trip to Oshawa on Sunday, Dec. 4 helped to extend the McGregor Hardware Bantams win streak to 3. The competition on this trip was the L.N.H.L. Canadians, and although the boys weren't as sharp as they had been on the Saturday, they played well enough to beat the Canadians 5-4. The first period was all Canadians, taking an early lead 1-0. The second was another storey, as early in the period Jeff Laird converted a pass from Eric Janssens to pull the Toros even. A face off and 10 seconds later O. J. Sidor pushed Bowmanville up by one as he finished off a nice set up by Guy Freeman and Paul Boyle. Oshawa being very tough and our boys resting on past performance, brushed by with two goals of their own. But the McGregor boys mustered together and Aaron Ulrich blasted home the equalizer, unassisted, just 30 seconds before Mark Tripp took a pass from Craig deBlois to move ahead once more. The third period was an even frame as Oshawa scored and then Bowmanville's Brad 1 Carnegie from Tripp and Britt Cole scored to end the contest, Thursday, Dec. 8, Bowmanville travelled to Pickering and ended their winning streak as Pickering pounded the Toros 7-2. The highlight of this game from Bowmanville's point of view was solid goaltending by Burke Lush, a goal by Paul Boyle, assisted by Britt Cole and Chris Hall and a penalty shot goal by Brad Carnegie. Maybe a hard loss is what the boys needed, because two days later hosting Uxbridge, the Toros played their own game and skated off with a well deserved 11-0 win. Scoring for Bowmanville in the first period was Craig deBlois from Murk Tripp and Brad Carnegie, Paul Boyle from O.J. Sidor and Chris Hull and Tripp from Jeff Laird from Boyle. Second period scorers were Guy Freeman from Laird and Rob Real, O.J. Sidor from Mike Kane and Aaron Ulrich and John Begg from Sidor. Third period scoring was O. J. Sidor from Albert Big Canoe, Britt Cole from Big Canoe and Boyle, Paul Boyle from Chris Hall and Britt Cole, Paul Boyle and his hat trick from Freeman and Laird and Jeff Laird from Boyle. Congratulations are issued to Darrin Bunker on his shutout and a round of applause to the entire defense team consisting of Britt Cole, Aaron Ulrich, John Begg, Chris Hal, Mike Kane and Albert Big Canoe as they held together to fight off any consistant attack. The McGregor Hardware Minor Bantam Toros' next home game is Sat., Dec. 17 against Orono and Monday, Dec. 19 Trenton visits at 6:30 p.m. Triple F M. Griffioen 61, G, Evers 55, P, Flonk 54, W. DeLange 50, D. Van Abbema 50, A. Bonsma 45, N. Griffioen 42, A. Van Halteren 41, H. Vandergaast 40, A, De Jager 39, B. Vroom 35, M. Rozema 34. Twenty seconds later, Brad Bamsey gave Bowmanville a 4 - 3 lead, only to have Trenton score with just 50 seconds left in regulation time to send the game into overtime. There were six go ils scored in two miniites and thilrfy'seco'nds of frenzied action. Bowmanville went right to the attack in the overtime, and Brad Cruess potted the winner at the 54 second mark to send the Toros into the championship championship game. It was hard to think the final would be as exciting as the Trenton game, but it too was excitement packed. The Toros had many scoring chances, but some outstanding goaltending goaltending and bad breaks thwarted Bowmanville. At the other end Langford was equal to the task, as he held East Gwillimbury Gwillimbury scoreless. There was only a minute left in the second period when East Gwillimbury scored the first goal. The Toros tied it midway in the third, finally cashing in on one of their numerous chances. McLaughlin McLaughlin scored from linemates Whitmarsh and Neill. Bowmanville continued to carry the play as they had most of the day, but it was East Gwillimbury who took a 2 -1 lead with just 2:14 left in the game. The Toros came back when Chris Lee scored with 1:20 left in the game, knocking in his own rebound. The game went into overtime, and Cruess continued his heroics, scoring at the 45 second mark of overtime to give Bowmanville the championship. championship. McLeod and Dawson drew assists. It was an exciting and tense day for the Toros and their fans, and they displayed a great deal of poise and discipline discipline under pressure packed circumstances. Special mention should be made of the goalies, Langford and Bird; and the defense corps of Bamsey, Davey, Duncan and St. Amand, all of whom were outstanding throughout the day. Dutchman Bantams Player of the Week 9? JOHN ROMANO NO. 8 LEFT WING Photo by Lange's Photo Lab Undefeated String Finally Ends December 7th was the day the Bubble Burst for the Major Bantams as their unbeaten string of 32 games ended at the hands of a fired up Pickering team. Knowing they had another another game immediately after this one, perhaps they were trying to pace themselves, but the strategy didn't work to their advantage in the game. The Toros started off well, scoring the first two goals of the game frerfn the sticks of Mike Gallant from Chris Shmyr and Scott Page followed followed by Chris Beck from George Pithie and Larry Perris and then the roof fell in as Pickering Pickering scored four unanswered goals to win the game 4 - 2. Many players expressed a sigh of relief to finally have the pressure off and put it behind them and it seemed that way as they played much better hockey in their second game, beating Oshawa by a score of 3 - 2. It was a very cleanly played game as there was only one penalty called throughout the duration. Oshawa opened the scoring at the 7:53 mark and it stood until Glen Campbell scored at 2:38 on passes from Chris Beck and Jamie Downing. The tie lasted only 38 seconds when Oshawa scored again to go ahead 2-1. There was no scoring in the second but the Toros came out flying in the third, scoring two quick goals, the first by Chris Beck from Brian Noble and the winner by John Romano who scored unassisted at the 8:41 mark. The game lasted just over two minutes longer as time ran out and the teams were buzzed off the ice. Earn Tie and Win on Weekend With just 1:09 remaining in the game, the Toros lit up the scoreboard and earned a hard fought tie with their counterpart counterpart from Cobourg, This was the 2nd time in a week that the team has come back from a deficit to tie the Cobourg team. Cobourg scored first but the Toros retaliated with three of their own, the first by Kelly Armstrong with an assist from the ice as he shot the puck from outside the blueline and it took a funny bounce in front of the net and eluded the goalie, Chris Shmyr got the M. With three seconds left in the game and the faceoff in the Toros' end, Cobourg pulled their goalie in favour of the added attacher but it almost backfired as the Toros won the draw cleanly and Chris Shmyr fired the puck down the ice right into the centre of the empty net but unfortunately the clock was faster than the puck. Toros Shut Out Markham Despite the fact the game against Markham "AA" on Sunday resulted in almost 50 minutes in penalties including majors and misconducts, this was one of the rare games this season the Toros have been oùtshot by their opposition. Scptt Webster played a great game in the net stopping 29 shots to lead his teammates to a 2 - 0 victory, earning his fourth solo shutout of the season. John Romano was the shooter shooter for the Toros as he got both goals, the first on a pass from Mike Gallant and tne second on relays from Chris Shmyr and Scott Page. The team is looking much better offensively offensively these days which is great as they'll have to be sharp as they are in a five- game tournament in Hespeler over the holidays. The defensemen are logging a lot of ice time and standing up well in the absence of their teammates Jamie Lever and Mike Colwell who are both out with minor injuries and hope to be back with the team very soon. On a more serious note, everyone is hoping things go well with centre Glen Campbell Campbell who was injured Wednesday Wednesday night and was taken off the ice on a stretcher. Xrays were taken of his right knee but no bones were broken and torn ligaments are suspected. For now Glen has to get around with the aid of crutches, but knowing Glen it will be hard to keep a good man down. United Drug Mart extended their unbeaten streak to 5 games while Clinic Pharmacy moved into a share of second place in the Oliver Division during last weekend's action in the BNCHL. The 8:00 p.m. Saturday game between Shoppers Drug and Beasties saw Shoppers move 8 points ahead in the Oliver Division as a result of their 7-2 victory. Gary James provided all the goals needed by scoring 3, giving him a league leading 17 for the season. Also scoring for the Drug Mart were Kevan Lacey, Dave Browne, Peter Hobb and Wally McKay. Beastie marksmen were Bernie Alldred and Jeff Bickerstaff. United Drug and San Marino faced off in an important Burke Divisional match-up for the nightcaps. United, led by their high- scoring trio of John Stainton, Rick Hall and Doug Rickard, turned back the slumping Chargers by a 3-2 count. Stainton and Hall each scored once and Rick Drew netted the winner while Rickard added a pair of assists. San Marino, G.P. Clinic improved their record to an even .500 and with a few breaks it could be higher as they have dropped 4 games by a one goal margin this season. Once again the damage was done by the line of Pat Murdock, Bill Janitsch and George Hillis. Hillis had the hat trick, Janitsch 1 and 3 and Murdock 4 helpers. Ron Shackeltonj with his first of the season, completed the Clinic scoring. Tavern goals were by Grant Powell with his ninth and -Wilfred White his fourth of the year.
