Mercer Letter To the Editor Dear Mr. James: I enjoyed reading Mrs. • •C-jsvman's letter in last week's Statesman regarding closing the Fitness Centre during the holidays. I would like to thank her on several counts. She infers that I am middle- aged. I'd like to thank her for that. A less kindly person would have dismissed me as elderly. I would also like to thank her for being such a diligent watchdog over the public purse and saving us all that money when the Centre is closed. I suppose she is one of those to whom we should give credit for saving us another lot of money by having the foresight foresight to close the Darlington and Bowmanville arenas for all but two days during the holidays. I would further like to thank Mrs. Cowman for pointing out that, although she doesn't use tax-subsidized facilities herself, herself, the Fitness Centre is indeed supported by taxpayers' taxpayers' money. Some people might even think that this would be an added reason for allowing the taxpayers to use it when they have the time. And finally, I would like to congratulate Mrs. Cowman on her efforts to keep fit. I have always admired her trim and youthful appearance which is no doubt enhanced by her activities of exercising, sailing sailing and skiing. I also know that she swings a pretty good tennis racquet. So, hopefully, this holiday season, there will be plenty of snow for Mrs. Cowman and all the other area residents to indulge their skiing skiing pleasure - if they can afford it. It is about the only activity available for them to do. Yours sincerely K. W. Slemon enjoyed Christmas dinner with their daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Harold- Luxton, Bowmanville. Bowmanville. The huge Metropolitan area of Toronto, with a population of 2,300,000, and smaller cities such as Barrie, Orillia, Mississauga, Oshawa, and Peterborough present a particular challenge for ministry in a time of heavy unemployment. There is a need for at least nine new parishes in the 1980's for a more effective ministry. TELEPHONE 623-6555 JOHN MANUEL, C.G.A.
