This team from BrooklinAVhitby emerged as the champions in a successful Novice Selects hockey tournament held at the Darlington Sports Centre last Wednesday, December 28. The Brooklin/ Whitby team defeated Port Hope 2-1 in the final game ofthe series to clinch the "B" championship. Eight teams took part in the competition. Ken Wright Haulage was the sponsor of the tournament. tournament. Despite the weather, the tournament was a great success at Darlington arena. I had numerous comments from out-of-towners, admiring the arena and the men who work there. Bowmanville's first game of the tournament was very evenly matched against a strong Whitby team. Bowmanville's Bowmanville's Mark Bradley and Steve DeBlois singled, assisted assisted by Chris McCarthy and Richard Bateman. Whitby couldn't get one past our goalkeepers goalkeepers Brent Knapp and Sarah Couch, The second game of the morning was Oshawa's Red Wings defeating Ajax Blue Cross 5 - 0. Goals were scored by Oshawa's Clancy Cole (two), Robert Accardi (two), and Gerevin Sytnyk (one). I have to praise this Port Hope team who just put a team together to enter the tournament and tied Stouffville Stouffville 2 - 2 by the end of (be game. Goals for Stouffville were scored by Geoff Smith, assist for Dale Bull, and Danny Clements, assist for Danny Spoorenberg, Port Hope's goals were scored by Joshua Davis, assisted by Danny Ford and Marty Gray, assist for Jason Green. Unfortunately Unfortunately for Port Hope, Stouffville Stouffville got the first goal which determined the winner. The first round ended with Scarborough Canadians defeating defeating Markham 17 - 2. The B series begun with Whitby defeating Ajax 3 • 2. One of the most exciting games of the series, Whitby's Billy Sundlford scored in the lust 42 seconds to break the lie and give himself u hut-trick. Ajax goals were scored by Matthew Muir and Brian Smith. Two more teams that were well matched in this second game of the B series were Markham and Port Hope. Their enthusiastic supporters helped them break a tie game, in the last minute and a half when Joshua Davis got one past the Markham goalkeeper. goalkeeper. The first goal for Port Hope was also scored by Joshua, the second by Jason Green, assist for David Fleming. Markham's goals were scored by Ryan Hosford and Kevin James. Bowmanville's Ken Wright Selects and Oshawa's Red Wings headed the beginning of the A series. This indeed was our most exciting game. At the end of the first period, Oshawa was leading 3 - 1. Oshawa's goals by Ian Black, Robert Accardi and Geravin Sytnyk, assisted by Ricky Irwin and Ed Golding. Bowmanville's Bowmanville's goal was scored by Gary Adams, assist for Tracy Lemkc. Good positional play and great goalkueping kept Oshawa back in the second period. With six minutes left in the third period, Richard Bateman was left open to get two goals for the Bowmanville team, putting the game into overtime. The goaltenders were removed and this was anyone's game for the next two minutes, Finally, How- manville's Jeff White got the puck and broke the defense of Oshawa to put one past the goalkeeper to end the game 4 - 3 for Bowmanville. The second game of the A series was Scarborough Canadians against Stouffville, The score was 16 - () for the Canadians. What can I say, this was a very disciplined team. Championship Gaines In the B Division, Port Hope met Whitby for the final championship game. The game was scoreless for the first two periods. In the beginning beginning of the third period, Whitby's Scott Burgess broke the tension, scoring the first goal, assisted by Billy Sandi- ford and Casey Bryant. One minute later, Steven Wood scored for Whitby with the help of Jamie Pawluk and Daryl Pleshe giving them a 2 - 0 lead. Port Hope's Joshua Davis scored their first goal, assisted by Scott Davis bringing bringing the game closer to the end. There just wasn't enough time for Port Hope, defeated by Whitby 2-1. In the championship game in the A division, Bowmanville met Scarborough Canadians. Both teams were working hard for this first goal. The last two minutes of the first period, Scarborough's Mark Phillips got two past the Bowmanville team to end the first period 2 - 0. The second period scoreless, brought us quickly into the third and final chance, Bowmanville, playing shorthanded, gave Canadians another opportunity for Ron MacFarlune unassisted giving them a three goal lead. More bad luck for Bowmanville, too many men on the ice, made it easy for Canadians Alfie Marquardt and Brian Suno- hura to add two more goals. Our guys kept plugging and finally Doug "Bear" Parkin slipped one through, passed from Richard Bateman, Two minutes later, Bowmanville's Jeff White scored from Gary Adams to bring the game a little closer. Canadians' Mark Zeccino scored the last goal of the game to give Canadians the A Championship. The most valuable player of the game was Canadians' Alfie Marquardt. The final score was 6 - 2. We were very proud of our team, making it to the end and giving the Canadians some good competition. We'd like to thank Mr. Ken Wright and wife for support and presenting trophies at the tournament. SELECTS DEFEAT OSHAWA 5-3 On Dee. 16, the Novice Selects defeated Oshawa's Red Wings 5 - 3 at Oshawa's Civic Auditorium.
